So I am creating this thread on behalf of my dad. Over the last few years hes fallen on hard times and is looking for a way to make "good" money. Hes currently an engine machinist but the pay isn't as lucrative as he'd like. He got turned on to trucking by a random acquaintance.
Now I dont know a #### thing about Trucking, but I do know a thing or two about scams. Hes getting linked up with KLLM and he really seems to be drinking the kool-aid...the "if its too good to be true, it usually is". He has no experience at all in trucking...never even been in a big rig and hes all in about making this move. I am trying to do all i can to protect him from getting in further financial misery but I dont have any background information.
Can anyone help me out with info on something like this...is it a good idea? Is KLLM ready to take your money and run? Can he earn a liveable wage (he currently brings home roughly $400 a week). Theres just so many things I see going wrong but again I dont know enough about any of this to help him.
Thank you!
A lot of information needed - KLLM

He has no way of really doing research either, as he is technologically ignorant. Getting him to use email was an extreme accomplishment so I am I trying to do it all for it him. He basically is taking everything the recruiter is saying at face value and not questioning it whatsoever. It all just sounds too good, easy, and "free".
-
Also, he is planning on attending the academy in Burns Harbor, IN but currently living in a suburb outside of Chicago.
-
That academy trains KLLM and FFE drivers.
KLLM owns FFE and owns the academy.
I'd go with FFE if it were me, but both will get the job done.
He's not being ripped off. The trucking company wants students to have some skin in the game since the trucking company is doing the training and assuming all liability which can run into the millions.
born&raisedintheusa and Jenn72 Thank this. -
Here's another outfit that trains in Missouri and Montana.

My fear is that he gets in with this company then at the end of the training he isnt offered a job and owes a ton in tuition and fees.
-
If he passes the school and has any required endorsements then he will be hired.
About the only way he won't be hired is if during orientation, after graduating, it's discovered he withheld information such as past drug use, including pot, criminal record, traffic tickets.
He will be required to submit to a hair follicle drug test.
Tell him to read the application carefully and make sure it has all required information. -
So he currently has a license and has for awhile but has had 2 DUI's. The recruiter said it doesnt matter as they werent in the last 5 years.
-
When he gets to the school, tell him to ask about the DUI's again to make sure the recruiter is correct.
The website doesn't have the qualifications for KLLM.
Most companies do have something like, "No DUI's within last 5 yrs." or something like that.Last edited: May 1, 2020
