Got an issue I'm stumped on and don't have long time experience with the D13. Issue is cylinder 4 is smoking a bit with a little smoke and slight miss. Goes away with cylinder 4 cutout. Cylinder balance showed no issues. Tech tool showing errors for other tests. Only fault throwing fault for turbo not responding. No coolant loss. No hard start issues. Truck is deleted.

Backstory on recent work done. 6 or so months ago Cylinder 6 liner cracked. New liner, piston, rod, and head.
Came back about a month ago the rear plastic timing cover was leaking. Replaced with the updated one. New cam sensor and its shimmed.

Current testing. Overhead and brake adjustments have been doubled checked. Still no change. Our Volvo go to guy is now out for the month for reserves. I took over. Swapped injector 3 and 4. Smoke stayed with cylinder 4. Individually pulled injector connectors while running to see if possible short in harness from another injector could be causing it. No change.

Pulled head. Will have pics. No bent or burnt valves. Piston height between 3 and 4 is the same. Cylinder 4 exhaust is caked with soot while all others are not. No irregular wear and damage on cam or rockers. Turbo was seized up with the soot and not able to adjust the vanes. A test ecm was tried with no change. Turbo outlet, air to air, and intake were clean. Head side of cylinder 4 combustion was unusually cleaner than the rest.

    Any insight would help.

A thought I've had is possibly the a valve issue in the brake rocker, but gonna get the book out and read up on how that rocker and brake valve system operate.

(FIRST EXHAUST VALVE PIC IS 3 FOR COMPARISON)

Can't see better on the picture but exhaust soot inside the turbo looks oily. Could be oil burning smoke from leaking exhaust valve or cracked head.

    devedo Thanks this.

That thought has crossed my mind. It's a thick gritty wet buildup. New head though, but could be. Hell have had repeated turbos bad outta the box from Volvo. From what I've seen bad fuel/air ratio issue exhaust smells super rich and interior of exhaust is wet and discolored. Instead of gritty and dark like oil contamination with this short of a run time from it being new.

Contemplating on sending up to get head and valve guides tested.

Are D13s overly sensitive to it's fuel mixture in causing it to have a slight miss with say a slight oil leak? Asking for future reference on troubleshooting probability issues.

I've heard all about the injector cup issues they have.

New parts or remanufactured doesn't give any warranty the parts are good today. Same experience as you have with Volvo turbo I have with Cummins turbo. Badly leaking oil out of the box.
The other thing to check is injector trim code set right for every injector?

I'd have to check on the trim code. Didn't know they used them. Do they send a file with the new injectors? If they do and it doesn't match is calling the dealer only way to get them or able to get it through tech tool?

You mention you have access to Techtool. Each injector has trimcode marked. This trim code says to ECM how long injector solenoid need to be on to inject proper amount of fuel in cylinder. You can not swap injectors from hole to hole without changing ECM settings. The engine will work but not as it should good.

Yes. We have tech tool. I've dealt with trim codes alot on CATS. I didn't know Volvos used them too.

Do they send the trim file with the injectors like CATD or it downloaded through Tech Tool?

Can't change the trim codes on this truck. It's deleted. Electrical system comes up as a Version 2.0 Instead of a 2.6 or whatever it should be. So there's no option for trim code calibrations.

I'm not Volvo expert but I think something wrong with PTT. I have PTT probably from same source you have and it's capability is trimmed. Look for updates if you know how it to do.

If truck is deleted you can only use PTT 1.12 to change parameters.
