Former CEO of Arrow Trucking Co, James Douglas “Doug” Pielsticker, is free from federal prison after serving just over half his sentence. While his appeal for “compassionate release” was denied, Pielsticker will be able to serve the rest of his sentence in the comfort of his own home.
The story of Arrow Trucking and Doug Pielsticker is infamous in the trucking community. Just three days before Christmas in 2009, the company closed its doors without warning, stranding hundreds of drivers all over the country. After a joint FBI/IRS investigation, Pielsticker was arrested and charged with multiple counts of fraud.
Pielsticker took a plea deal in 2015, was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, and ordered to pay $22 million. After pleas for leniency were denied in February of 2018 and other former Arrow execs went to prison as well, things were mostly quiet.
But then came COVID-19. On April 3rd, Pielsticker’s attorneys asked a judge to release him from prison or send him to home confinement. According to Tulsa World, a judge denied his request on April 14th stating that he had not met the requirements. Despite that however, prison officials approved Pielsticker’s release due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the prison.
According to Tulsa World, at least 467 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Fort Worth, Texas prison where Pielsticker was being held. At least four inmates have died from the virus.
Pielsticker will be subject to home confinement until May 23rd, 2021, two years less than what he was sentenced to. He will also serve three years of supervised release and will still need to pay $22 million in restitution.
