Actually, you'll know when it's time, because your heart won't be in it anymore. It could be a driving error/mistake or more than likely just after you get your 992nd dispatch from Fresno-Knoxville.....dang, another run on I-40. I always thought I would die in a truck and be found 3 days later somewhere. And I did not want that. (retired driver age 74)

When I sold my truck in '08 the guy that bought it was 78 yrs old. Said he wanted to be able to book a load and get outta Dodge when his old lady started bothering him. Which must have been a lot to spend $25,000 on a truck.
Scooter HBG, Coffey, 650cat425 and 7 others Thank this. -

My uncle drove until he was 64, Got into a no-fault bad rollover accident that almost took his life and he swore he would never drive again. Stayed out of the game for five years and one day he woke up and said “truck driving is in my blood I’m going back out. Got his CDL updated, bought himself a truck and at 69 years old Drove another eight years until he literally dropped dead while in sleeper at age 77. Died in his sleep, doing what he loved. Drove a truck all his life except those five years off. Literally the only thing he did.
I asked him how he got started back in the day and he said it was on a dump truck. The owner of the business gave him the keys sat with him while he drove down this dirt road for about 2 miles, the owner got out and told him to drive back by himself. That was his training. The rest he figured out on his own. LolScooter HBG, rachi, nredfor88 and 3 others Thank this. -

I'm 63 and won our last plant rodeo/backing contest...$150 cash.
Gimme a 60 y/o driver over a 25 y/o driver any day.
You should be able to drive as long as you can maintain a CDL.
Although I'm giving it up when I'm able to collect my government cheese in 3 years, I will retain my CDL and medical card for part time work if I feel the want.
There is not and should not be a standardized age imho.Scooter HBG, PE_T, MTN Boomer and 9 others Thank this. -
Most of our drivers are in their 60s and we have a few over 70. They do great work.
The youngest driver we have, hired about five years ago, is in his 40s. The other drivers call him The Kid.Scooter HBG, PE_T, 650cat425 and 10 others Thank this. -
I would not want to know when my life ends but if the technology advances soon enough it just may happen.Scooter HBG, Coffey, Opendeckin and 1 other person Thank this.
