Looking at buying my next used truck. Trying to decide on pre-emission vs. post-emission.

Personally, I like the older pre-emission engines, but I've noticed lots of people complaining about leaking manifolds on the Detroit 60 series and CAT engines. Does anyone know if there was an issue with these engines that caused the manifolds to leak/break so often? I sure hope manufacturers have solved the leaking manifold problem on modern engines. Anyone know if modern engines chew through manifolds like the Cats and Detroit 60s did? I'm tired of replacing manifolds, but I sure do love those old-school engines.

I haven't had to replace the manifold on my E model in the 3 1/2 years I've owned it. I haven't seen them being a recurring problem on here anywhere but thats don't mean anything I guess.

I've got almost a million miles exactly on my series 60, put a set of bearings in it about six months ago. Never done anything else to it except for regular overheads.

Manifolds?? Never give them a thought.

You only see and hear of problems on the internet. The rest us keep trucking 3 1/2 years on 60 series only one broken exhaust manifold stud very common on all engines. People put to much into internet rating's cause you never hear from the thousand and thousand of the trouble free trucks. Beside it still cheaper to repair the old one then the cost of an emissions engine.

Manifolds cracking or breaking isn’t the problem I know about. It’s the bolts get weak and stuck in the head and can break off due to the constant heat cycles. But thats been going on with every engine since the beginning of time.
As for pre-emission engines. 100% for me as long as they are still able to run on diesel and the country is still free to do so!

The center section will burn out on a Detroit, just replace it with a one piece aftermarket, bully dog, full tilt, psi, plus others.
Turbo $700, verses $5000, zero dollars for emissions or 10 to 20 to maybe fix emissions system. Plus a great reaso to not go to California,.
    Pre emissions wins every time

    What he said.

I went with a one piece manifold - and threw a BW turbo on at the same time.

    I’m a pre 2004 fan.

My 97 and 99 century both had det ser60. Had a problem breaking bolts on a pulley. Was common problem, Google it, bought a bracket for $100 or less on line. On my 97 around 850k. Did a Detroit stage 2 over haul. Detroit tried to talk me pit of it twice, because it wasnt yet needed. Around 1.3mil I had to replace a cam and 2 injectors. So I had them do all 6.
I did PM every 12k and every oct for my birthday present to myself. I ran the rack.

Thanks. Any idea why the center section tends to burn out on a Detroit?

    It’s a 3 piece slip joint unit.
