These days with the virus they have been closed more.
But now that things are starting to open up again, I wonder how many will be wanting a bit more income from inspections.

It depends on the state. Some are by weight, for instance IL is anything over 8 tons gross. CA is anything that is designed to carry cargo that isn't a pickup truck.

I used to pull with a F350 and 48 trailer. We hauled personal cars bought at auctions, Ebay, Hemmings, etc. Trucks would shout at me on the CB telling me to get out of the scales, and I would tell them I had a DOT# and they would shut up.

If you are under 10,000 lbs no need to scale

    383.5

Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) means a motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles used in commerce to transport passengers or property if the motor vehicle— (a) Has a gross combination weight rating of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more) inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds); or
    (b) Has a gross vehicle weight rating of 11,794 or more kilograms (26,001 pounds or more); or
    (c) Is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver; or
    (d) Is of any size and is used in the transportation of hazardous materials as defined in this section.

Commercial motor vehicle means any self-propelled or towed motor vehicle used on a highway in interstate commerce to transport passengers or property when the vehicle— (1) Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight, of 4,536 kg (10,001 pounds) or more, whichever is greater; or

    2) Next all drivers that operate vehicles over 10,000 lbs require a medical certificate. Here's the regulation :

    391.41 Physical qualifications for drivers.
(a)(1)(i) A person subject to this part must not operate a commercial motor vehicle unless he or she is medically certified as physically qualified to do so, and, except as provided in paragraph (a)(2) of this section, when on-duty has on his or her person the original, or a copy, of a current medical examiner’

15 replies and not a correct answer given. (Or post the specific states for a specific answer)

The only real answer is every state is different and you need you look up the state you are going through.
Some are all CMV's, some are CMV's over a specific weight, some are all vehicles over a weight irregardless of type of vehicle. And yes, some even follow the federal guidelines above.
Plus, you will never get in trouble for going in "just in case", although it's better to know than to guess.

Given that the entire country is in a financial crunch right now.

Scales will more then likely be looking to grab revenue anyway they can. Now.

If you don't qualify to be a commercial vehicle then no need to go in the scale. Seems clear to me.
Long and tall Sprinter I never did. Nobody ever chased me.
I was never inclined to be a volunteer either.

Commercial has nothing to do with it.

    It's up to the state.

Some states want ALL vehicles over 8,000 lbs. Pulling in.

Technically. Motorhomes should be pulling in but I doubt they do.
