.... What percentage of your overall pay comes from other things than actually driving miles. This is for drivers who are paid by the mile. I’m curious like how much detention, layover and any other pay types you might receive as a total percentage of your Annual salary. I just calculated mine out and determined that about 11% of my salary or income over the last year was for other things then driving. Safety bonus, detention pay, mechanical breakdown pay a couple times, and layover pay.
I ask, because I bumped in to a more experienced driver the other day and he swears that at least 1/3 of the income he makes each year comes from the above. Now I tend to go pretty soft on the detention pay requests. Maybe I need to bump it up a bit? I do t usually bother unless it’s several hours of sitting past appointment times...Maybe when I request it and it gets ignored I need to request it again and again? LOL
So what percentage of your pay comes from outside a total miles driven?
For company OTR drivers....

I never figured out the percentage, but that driver is probably correct at 1/3rd where he works. Not all companies are that reasonable when it comes to pay.
At a tanker company I was paid:
fuel the truck
pre-trip the truck
post-trip the truck
detention after one hour/the first hour was covered with "stop pay"
layover pay
34 hr. reset pay (choice of $50 cash or a hotel room)
break down pay
safety meeting pay
This was at Tankstar and don't know if it's still that way.Lennythedriver Thanks this. -
Under 3% But I believe mostly fair at current rates am middle of pack as I understand
An regional if that makes difference -
For me probably 1%. To me if you're making over 10% of your pay as accessorial you or your dispatcher is doing something wrong unless you work for a company that pays you for every step you take.

I say about less than one percent too. Rarely have I seen detention pay over the years. I get it periodically now, but ita not often that I sit in the dock for hours on end.

In Post #2 forgot, we were also paid $12.00 per day to help with food money. Had to show receipts that totaled at least $12.00
$12.00 may not seem like much, how many companies do that?
That's $84.00 in 7 days.bryan21384 Thanks this. -

In Fuel delivery I was paid by the hour.
You got. 45 min to load. 45 min to off load. Anything more than that you put down a reason it took longer but anything thing less you kept as bonus.
On a normal, no delay run was 15 min to load 30 min to offload so I'd ge an extra 45 min a run pay. At 6 loads a shift that was 4h 15min extra pay a day on a good shift. Made about $350 a day. If I had a long run that took time to load/offload that day would only pay $250. But that was 9 years ago.
You can make a lot from extra pay in the right circumstances.Chinatown Thanks this.
