A friend of mine's son was working in a convenience store when it got robbed a month ago. After the robbers left, he called the police and they gave him a complaint number.

Police are much different in different areas.

Some (many) departments need serious reform. Some (perhaps few) don't need to change anything.

    (These are merely my opinions)

Fine, but in those jurisdictions with no PD there had better not be any prosecutions for self defense or shooting people who invade their homes.

Just a guess, but it seems to me that the places that would be the most likely to aggressively prosecute people for self-defense, especially self-defense with a firearm, are the same places where locals are calling for the police to be defunded.

I loved to read growing up and read the newspaper every day and back in the 1990's (could have been late 80's actually) in Little Rock Arkansas there were so many armed robberies of liquor stores and convenience stores that the Sheriff had a press conference and announced that they were putting deputies armed with shotguns in the back of some of the stores with orders to shoot to kill anyone who came in to rob the store. And at least a couple of armed robbers got shotgunned by police while attempting to rob the store. The result of this was predictable: an immediate drop in armed robberies. If the local people are amenable to this type of thing then I think they are the same type to not want to see people prosecuted for self-defense.

If a person defends themselves and understands that they may face prosecution and they keep their mouths shut and then if they are charged they insist upon a jury trial, sure they could be convicted but its a chance I would take. I think a lot of people give the cops information that is used to prosecute them and also a lot of people get scared and take plea deals. Myself, if I had no choice but to defend myself and I was convicted by a jury of my peers, I would be able to accept that. I wouldn't be able to accept a plea deal and I wouldn't be able to live with being convicted because I "told on myself." Investigators know how to apply psychological pressure to get people to talk. If one cannot keep their mouth shut, they can certainly answer "I want a lawyer" to every question they are asked. Then if the cop has the audacity to say "you don't need a lawyer" or "why do you need a lawyer" just ask "is that legal advice" which should shut them up because it is illegal to practice law without a license.

Also, how many people can act appropriately, especially with a weapon, in a self-defense situation? If someone breaks into my house and I chase them down the street and kill them, is that self defense? It might be in some jurisdictions and not in others (I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice). I think a lot of people simply cannot think through all of this in the moment in order to behave in such a way as to lessen the chances of them being prosecuted. And then if it does go down, can they actually not tell them police anything that might be used against them later?

I think its changing everywhere as the younger generations take over, but there are still a lot of places in the US where most of the locals are not going to want to see someone prosecuted for using self-defense appropriately and the Prosecutor and the Sheriff are going to have to seek re-election. In some areas, it is nearly impossible to get a permit to even carry a handgun and surely we all remember when Plaxico Burress did close to two years in prison for carrying a handgun in NYC which he accidentally discharged in a nightclub. In some places if one were to accidentally shoot themselves in a nightclub the police might not even be called (or respond). So its different everywhere.

I 100% believe that police are necessary, mostly because there are a lot of people in society who can be preyed upon too easily. I don't need the police to protect me (and I don't anticipate that they will), but that's not the issue. However, the fact is that so-called "good cops" almost never cross the "blue line" and rat out so-called "bad officers" and at the end of the day "A FEW GOOD APPLES DON'T UNSPOIL THE WHOLE BUNCH."

(standard disclaimer: these are my opinions, and we all know what opinions are worth)

    Several things.

It was an attempted robbery. It wasn't a "guy bringing a knife to a gun FIGHT." If you say 'fight', it was a duel and duels are illegal. You're going down. The most common simple mistake. When you tell your story, You tell them about the attempt on your life. If you're 3 for 3 against home invaders, I will think that you are a bad arse, and everyone else will too, but never tell the story of your badassary. It was an attempt on your life, remember?

The thing that is scary is that you have all of these idiots out there that have been watching movies, where the one good guy can defeat an army of bad guys. Thus they have this idea in their head about being fair

For you people that may not know this, home invaders usually attack in groups of 3, and they are armed. They are going to do a surprise attack. How fair does that sound to you? The only advantage that you will have is, they won't know where you are at and if you are armed. So why would people who say that they are concerned about your safety, tell you to buy a gun that only shoots two rounds for 3 people and fire off those those two rounds blindly? Now if he could convince all home invaders to call you and give you advanced warning of their invasion, I could see a discussion about fairness. But why are they concerned with bettering the odds of success for home invaders?

Burress is an idiot. In most places, it is illegal to carry a gun in a place that makes more than 50% of it's revenue from alcoholic beverages. And said idiot was wearing sweatpants with no holster and no trigger guard. If you're gonna carry, you have to get training and carry correctly.

Funny, reminds me when two dudes robbed me in Detroit under gun point at bright day light. It took three phone calls to 911 and a two hour wait for the police car to finally show up
