So I just got a quote today on a Volvo VNX that I plan on purchasing new once my fiance and I get the settlement she's entitled to, drivetrain is going to be the D13 with compound turbos and the I-Shift transmission and am thinking of going with super single wheels and tires on the rear. Wheels I'm looking at are Accuride 22.5x14s, tires I'm eyeing are 445/50r22.5 Michelin X One XDN2 because they're the lightest super single tires I've found and still have a decent load rating, 10,200 pounds at 120 psi. Are these good tires? What should I look out with super singles? What should I keep an eye out for with the VNX more generally? Thanks in advance.

I hope you live in a place where it doesn't rain or snow.
You better buy a extra tire and carry it in your bunk beacause when you get a flat out on the road at 3 am nobody will have one , just my 2 cents.

Your going to need another wheel also. And yes the Michelin X series are good. Supers are not good for backing in snow and to make it worse it’s an automatic. You’ll have no control of the truck. My company truck is auto and supers. I absolutely hate it when backing. It sits on top of the snow and then you have mash the accelerator. Unlike just easing the clutch out.

    Just what I’ve experienced.

I had actually thought about getting a spare tire carrier with a chain and lock and mounting it on the catwalk behind the cab. I try to stay out of cold areas in the winter if there's inclimate weather and if I can't then I shut down if the roads get too bad, I don't often deal with rain either with being mainly in the Western states

That'll have to be something I just have to get used to then along with having a backup camera as well, I figure the reverse camera would make things somewhat easier so why not

Remember, when you get a flat on a super single, your done can't continue. Also more times than not when your loaded, even if you pull right over the rim can get destroyed quickly. Super singles are almost $1000 per tire. Can you imagine how bad road service will bend you over if you have a flat? I would stay away from super singles if I were you

I'll have to do some research into different brands as to one that may save the wheel if/when there's a flat, I remember there being something about that on the Goodyear website

Ok, It is just my opinion, but I would get duels. Are you interested in super singles because of weight?

More generally what should I watch out for in terms of maintenance with the VNX? First truck I've owned so I'm interested as to what can go wrong and how can avoid it

Mainly the weight savings, I'm also interested in supers because the truck is more likely to pull itself straight as compared with duals that wear unevenly on the inside and outside tire on a pair, plus the reduced risk of a fire from a blowout if I somehow don't notice it during hot weather because I wouldn't be able to try and limp the truck to a repair shop, plus it'd be quicker to chain in winter but I'm considering using traction sanders instead of chains
