Have a bit of an interesting rant.
Usually I go off into the deep end and on why my company can't get anything right. Or I am at a customer and they are doing everything they can to screw me over while keeping me as long as they can.
So this is kinda pre Covid. I had 5 drops and 3 P/U. The first four drops are all warehouses. Typical bump the dock and let them deal with the freight. In the very nose, I had a set of double stacked paddle boats. It's like a novel plastic boat you sit in and you get a bicycle style foot pedal. This set up powers a vertical circular paddle wheel that moves the vessel forward or aft, and this all depends on if you kick the peddles forward or in a reverse motion.
To share the burden of moving this primitive water craft forward or aft, you would have someone kicking a set of pedals that were directly tied to your set. One person would sit port side while the other manned the starboard side. Steering was done by one person manning a sole horizontal lever that would move the vessel port or starboard.
Not sure how else to describe this contraption, but I will add a photo of it at the bottom. I do think most will know what I am referring to.
So anyway, my last delivery took me way off route. The exact customer was Poinsett State Park. Fortunately, I lucked out and got a 35 ft liftgate trailer. It was 1215 and I was waaay ahead of schedule. The main roadway turned from highway to camping trail within 2 miles. Soon the roadway turned into gravel and one lane and I was dodging branches. The only reason why I pushed on was cause I knew it was still off season and I didn't expect someone coming down against me.
Eventually the roadway rapidly reopened to two peninsulas of parking spaces, cut in half by a isthmus of trees. I pulled over and grabbed my paperwork. To my dismay the only vehicle in that open parking lot was me. Things briefly got worse when I realized I was out of cell service.
Fudge it. I hopped out, turned off the truck and took inventory of the place. First thing I noted was a large lake on the left, being flanked by a rustic ranger station to the right. A small boathouse in the distance filled with canoes and paddle boats similar to the ones I was dropping off.
For a minute I was overwhelmed by the serene peace and quiet. But I realized I had to get this crap off my trailer and had no way to get in touch with someone working there.
To my surprise, the ranger station was open. It is climate controlled and the temp was a perfect 70°. Inside a handful of tables, chairs, a rustic fireplace, a set of couches and loveseat with foot rest. I looked around and found a sign directing me to their free WiFi. Saved at last.
I got in touch with my dispatcher after over an hour of being cut off. He told me to stand by while I found my way to the leather love seat and the accompanying foot rest. Not gonna lie... That loveseat just consumed me. I sunk in half a foot with each panel wrapping around my body and quickly losing my fight with staying awake. This was by far the most laid back and relaxing setting I had in months. Just as I was about to go out, I was disrupted by a welcoming message "stand by, they didn't expect you till past 3:30. Hang tight". The rangers were on the other side of the park doing some tree work and it would be a while. Absolutely splendid.
This is like too perfect. Took a 1 hour nap and wandered around going into off duty tourist mode. Clean bathroom and unlimited internet access as long as I was within 50 feet of the ranger station.
I could drag this rant out. It ended with a ranger named "Bubba" showing up without a forklift to unload me. Instead he took 2-3 50 minute round trips to his maintenance building getting ropes and chains to drag his boats off. I think that story is a rant of it's own.
Under normal circumstances, if I was stuck at a warehouse for this long I would have been PISSED. But this stop, coupled along with the OT I got starting at 3:30 made this the closest thing to a paid day off.
