The country has stopped respecting blue-collar work in general. At least when our ancestors were doing blue collar work, you would say it's a dirty job, but WOW does it pay well.

Wages have basically equalized across the board at this point, because I'm pretty sure corporations want to pay Americans about $60,000 or less on average for literally anything.

So if you're still doing blue collar work today? An office worker makes what you make, so you must be stupid to do hard labor, let alone live in a semi truck for the same money that Carol in accounting makes.

Another problem is that because wages have stagnated due to the weakening of unions in the trucking sector, in many cases, present company of course excluded, trucking can no longer attract the best and brightest.

Trucking companies have sought to service their customers at the expense of their employees for years, and now have a safety and image problem of their own doing.

If you go to a place where trucks aren't allowed, you will still see trash and pee bottles. The scum of society isn't only in trucks.

I'd have to say after de-regulation. Years ago, trucks had familiar names, and were driven by dear old dad. Once anybody and anyone could haul goods, people lost track of who was operating our nations trucks, and we became faceless nobodies that were in their way. The lack of respect these days, is one major reason why I quit this profession. If these morons only knew how important trucks are, they'd have more respect. A nationwide shutdown to slap these people in the face, like this virus crap, would show them.

Most individuals behind the wheel of anything don't have the skills or the maturity to be driving.

Anxiety levels are high. People are frustrated, looking to vent their anger. Never satisfied. Seems to be getting worse. A lot of Occupations are subject to rude people. Not just Truckers. Ask any Worker, that deals with the Public.

    Where have you been?

This has been happening for decades, ever since trucks were on the road.

Oh, I don't know about that. Years ago, many folks probably owed their lives to a truck driver. They had little caps and bow ties, it was a respectable occupation, everyone knew how important trucks and the drivers were and were usually the only ones out in the middle of the night for help. I think today, people are disconnected with what trucks do, and figure the goods at the grocery store, magically come from the "back room" somewhere. Once at a party, a young woman, mid 20's, said to us drivers, "so what do you guys do in those fancy chrome trucks , just drive around"? I was shocked, to say the least.

Yep. It’s pretty interesting that all the college degree snobs and so called professionals that always looked down on the labor and service industries as bums burn out from those diploma jobs and go to driving an evil truck and be labeled as a bum. I guess when they give out a transportation Phd at Harvard the respect will come back.
