2800 under a braking load won't kill an engine unless there is already serious damage done to it. Throwing a rod would be the main thing to worry about, but under a braking load stresses are different than under a load.
That said ... what is happening is the lower end is worn out, especially at the rod journals. Which goes back to the rod failure, it is more likely happen now.
So the op is not filling in the rest of the story, like when does the oil light go on, what is the idle oil pressure and when was the last oil change.
Upper end causing this?
Maybe but not likely. -

Megas buy trucks by the dozen, and pay ####. Stuff like this is part of the reason why. They can afford to lose a engine or truck every now and then. Hell the money they save by only doing pm's every 40-60k instead of 12-15k can pay for several new trucks every month. -
If it's a new head it's 5k for the part. Plus labor. North of 7k. Oil pressure is the oil pump or the o rings. The o-rings and oil manifold are like $400 plus the labor.

Headphones and apparently no presence of mind to occasionally look at your gauges. Sounds like negligence to me. I wouldn't expect you to pay, but I sure as hell would sue and get a judgment against you. I also wouldn't expect to collect. There's a difference between a breakdown and driving down the road with your head up your ###. I wouldn't expect to get a good reference either.

Employer may not legally be allowed to make him pay for repairs, but he can sure fire his arse. Which is exactly what I’d do if he didn’t offer to pony up for his mistake.
