I'm an experienced driver who's in the process of signing up with Swift. It looks like I'll probably be doing my orientation next week (6/30/20 or 7/1/20) or the week after that depending on how fast my paperwork goes through. I'll be doing orientation at, and officially running out of, Ocala. I plan on telling my driver manager that I don't need to get home at all. I'll still want "home time" at least every month but "home time" to me will just mean a 34 hour reset at any terminal in the country. I'll be taking a Lyft to a hotel for 1-2 days to get out of the truck during any resets. My apartment is just going to be storage for the next few years. Even if I happen to shut down at Ocala for a 34 hour reset I won't be driving all the way home (close to 2 hours away); I'll just stay at a hotel in Ocala if that happens.

I'm mainly posting this here in case any one has any questions that I can answer. I figure maybe someone will want to ask about orientation at Ocala or how the onboarding process works during the pandemic. If you have any questions, ask away and I'll try to answer as I get to the point in the process that you asked about.

If anyone has any general thoughts or suggestions, let me know those too.

I want to save up money to buy a house. Thanks to recent developments I have nothing going on where I live now. I figure I can go out, run, and make money without the stress of trying to get home to an apartment that I don't even like. I plan on doing this for 1-2 years. After that time I'll reevaluate. Maybe I'll find a dedicated account I want to run on. Maybe I'll find a dedicated account that's in another area and I'll move there. Maybe I'll save up some quick money, buy a house, and find a local job in that area. I don't know.

I should mention that even though I have over 6 years of experience, it's fairly stale. I only have about 2 years of experience in the last five years and none in the last 2, so I don't have a ton of options for who to drive for. Since I want to stay out on the road I figure Swift is the best choice since they have a ton of terminals all around the country.

well thats a good mentality to have. i came out here with the same intention and started with swift as well... working on getting a house currently. just been living in my truck mostly and getting a room wherever... it can be done... it is not easy though to live in the truck. its a hell of a lifestyle

Those who can do and love OTR have it made. You'll always have good pay and job stability if you keep your nose clean

Fortunately I'm a pretty experienced travel hacker. I get hotel rooms dirt cheap so I'll be getting out of the truck anytime I get a 34 hour reset. I'll probably even splurge and get a room during a 10 hour break once in a while if I'm parked within walking distance and I can get a good price.

If anyone wants travel hacking tips specifically directed at truck drivers let me know. I've got plenty.

Those are the first 7 digits of pi. I tried to memorize pi back in 1997 to break the Guinness World Record which was 42,195 digits back then. They took that record out of the books for a while. They recently added it back in. It's now 70,000 digits but I'm thinking about trying to break it again. That's why I chose those digits.

Do you not believe I'm a real person? WTF?
