Truck was pulled over in dirt lot and driver was taking a break. Car with the old man pulls up next to truck and then gets out to take a leak in front of truck I bet.

this was posted earlier. i think that the trucker should have done a "walk around". i know i ALWAYS did when i stopped (for whatever reason).

Came close to running over a old man myself.
In SF Chinatown on Broadway there was another truck in the left lane next to me. Light turns green and he starts to go but immediately slammed on his breaks so I do the same not knowing what he might be seeing. A moment later a 200 year old guy clears walking past my square hood so I can see him. Of course going against the light. The old man was so small I don't think I would of felt running him over.

Lesson learned. Always stop far enough back to see full crosswalk. This happened a decade ago and I still abide by that rule.

I agree, always do a walk around.
I signed out at a batch plant. Jumped in the truck and moved two feet and stopped because of a crunching sound. The gate I was parked next to swung out a few feet and rested against a fender. There went the gate. Embarrassing.

The general public is completely unaware of the fact that objects cannot be seen when they are up close to the front of a truck. I'm haunted by internet videos of Russians getting smooshed by orange dump trucks.

The other probability is that the person may have been sleeping when the driver went across them

Driving off after any break without doing a walk around is insane IMO. I see drivers do this all the time and never understood it. Usually at truckstops, You'll see drivers wake up, jump in behind the wheel and just take off.
Anytime I leave the driver's seat, I do a walk around. I check tires and 5th wheel every time. It only took someone pulling my pin one time to learn to always visually check 5th wheel

It seems one near miss is enough to wake some people up. It did me.

When I was driving. Any time I came to a stop for more than 15 mins warranted a walk around before rolling again.

If a truck is running, make eye contact at the drivers seat. Better yet, stay the f away.
