Delivered load in Portland this morning. It's like someone turned the freight availability light off yesterday afternoon. I guess the long 4th of July weekend wasn't cancelled after all ;-)

I saw so many cars, campers, motor homes, pickup trucks jammed with camping gear, 5th wheels, campers, etc, making a fast bee-line to somewhere today.

From what I've seen, the PNW in general has been a virtual dead zone for outgoing spot market freight for well over a year. If I didn't have contract freight coming out of there, I'd probably never go up that way at all except for the occasional high paying northbound load. The few loads that do make it to the spot market are all between .75 cents and a buck fifty per mile. Most of the big agriculture shippers up there are locked into contracts with brokers, and it's tough getting your foot in the door unless you know somebody.

Same for me. Long deadhead home yesterday but after about 3 p.m. I was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it was. That really surprised me. There was basically no one on the road after about 5 for me. Holiday bonus!

I also went empty all the way from Montgomery, NY to Detroit yesterday. I was expecting market to be dead though and only took this load, because they agreed to pay roundtrip rate.

That's where I'm at too. Seems like we should all be going broke with the corona thing, but I'm working a lot less and in much better financial shape than last year. I'm liking this O/O thing. I guess the first year is always the most difficult as an O/O.

I made sure none of my trucks were further then 250 miles away on Friday just in case. Good thing because 3 came back empty.

Looking back I should have closed on Friday. Now I gotta pay normal Friday pay plus holiday pay for today. Should have called Friday the 4th and been done with it.
