I'm considering car hauling pretty heavily. I currently pull liquid and dry bulk tanks for a good company. & I pulled flatbed before tanks.
Currently i'm on tracking for making around 60k this year. Which isn't bad considering I'm not running as hard as I possibly can. Is 60k or more a year doable car hauling?
I was looking into a couple of companies like virginia or SEC to train me. I'm not too interested in companies like United Road or H&A for training. I live in Jacksonville, FL which I've heard is pretty prime for car hauling. I'm truthfully just bored with my current gig and would like to learn something new.
Any advice would be helpful
Time for a change?

If you want a new challenge, go for it.
If you want better than 60k - look at LTL.
Honestly - it became boring for me too, but I couldn’t argue with the $ or benefits, and routine. -
$80k is easy, good carhaulers will do $100k. Not quite that your first year, as it'll take 3 months minimum to get comfortable.
3 things that good carhaulers have: a solid load routine, an eye for detail and good spatial intelligence. The 1st can be taught, the others are more innate.Kozakvod, Tropsnart, brian991219 and 5 others Thank this. -
With car sales at an all time low, I'd think car, or more accurately, pickup truck hauling, has got to be the worst idea. While new car might be okay, all other car hauling is the pits. Cars that aren't where they are suppose to be, won't start, or 5 cars in, and none of them start, flat tires, Delivery situations, bad areas of town, IDK, I'd stay where you're at, really. I'd say, the last real good days for car haulers was in the 80's.

Not true for this carhauler who was Union trucking in the mid 80’s. The carhaulers today who are constantly complaining that they can’t make any money, probably couldn’t have hacked it in the 80’s either. Experienced company drivers that truly want to work today make $2,000 a week or they are doing something wrong. They could be working in the wrong location or for the wrong company. Carhauling is not the premier job that it was in the 80’s as driver pay has not kept up with inflation, but it is still better than most jobs. UPS pay has blown carhauling pay out of the water and many LTL companies are paying carhauler wages or better, but they usually have a screwed up schedule and don’t have the flexibility a carhauler does. Is everyone who is hauling cars doing good? Absolutely not, but there are many of us who are doing good.Tropsnart, 24kHotshot, brian991219 and 3 others Thank this. -
If you live in Jacksonville look at Centurion also. There drivers seem to speak well of that company. SEC is going to run you all around the country. Don’t know much about them but I hardly ever see them at the same place twice. That can hurt your earning potential if they don’t have a contract. Virginia has a huge contract with Honda. You’ll see a lot of the same dealerships week in week out. 60+ is easily done but a good company ain’t gonna let you shag around long enough if that’s all you’re after.
