Have I lost my mind here? I've looked at the ratios and it seems as though almost every thing in the ratios are very close except that the 18 has a lower and slower normal reverse at 12.85 where the 8LL is 9.85. I like the 8LLs reverse when backing a good ways to the spreader to dump asphalt. 8LLand18SpeedRatios.jpg

Over drive is nearly identical and 1st, 2nd 3rd and so on are all very close all through out.
The 18 just gives you the option to grab a half a gear higher literally from anywhere.

The 8LL is out now so it would be the perfect opportunity to switch If I'm going to. Is there any reason why I shouldn't? I need to let the man know quick as possible.

Being its a dump truck, would stick with the 8LL. But sure like a 18 also. Always hated the times in a tri-axle and had to back a mile down a narrow road to the paver.

High range reverse is easier with a straight truck :p
