I finally was able to go into DMV yesterday and get my permit issued to me. Then I went and got the application from American Truck School in Redding, CA. Went and turned it in today. I plan on doing the 160 hour course. The local Smart Business Center couldn't get me in until Friday morning to fill out paperwork for the WIOA grant. But hopefully that will come through.
The school is making me apply for a pre-hire letter with 3 large OTR companies though, which I'm doing tonight. Does anyone know if this obligates me to actually work for one of them when I graduate CDL school? I'd rather not, as my desire is LTL linehaul. There's also local fuel tanker and wood by-product gigs, if LTL doesn't work right outta the gate.

Pre-hire does not obligate you at all.
alds Thanks this. -
No, they're just wanting to see if anyone would hire you when you get on the back side of this.
Think about it. You need 3 pre hire letters, but you can't work for 3 companies when you get out so how could they obligate you to anything? -
Thanks you two, that's exactly what I wanted to hear.
alds Thanks this. -
I got approved for WIOA and finally get to start on 7/20. When should I start applying to LTL companies? Now, during school, or when I pass the behind-the-wheel?
-
Start applying now.

Chinatown Thanks this.

I kept getting pushed back but finally got my WIOA payment voucher and start this coming Monday. I can’t freakin wait! I especially can’t wait to actually get a job and start driving for real!
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Day 2 is a wrap. Pre-trip is insane, its an unreal amount of stuff to remember. I got to drive some today and it was really fun. But dang, 10 speeds and double-clutching and raising RPMs is nuts. This school has some excellent instructors though. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I'm now even more looking forward to being a Driver.
homeskillet, sirhwy, firemedic2816 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Day 3, done. Worked a lot more on pre-trip. Finally got down backing in a straight line. I think they'll have me try offset backing tomorrow.
