I have over 15 years of otr experience. The problem is that non of it is recent.I had to go on dissability for 5 years. (kidney transplant). when i get my new kidney,Ill need to get back to work.
can I refurbish my cdl thru a school and jump right in after that or do I still have to find a training company and go out with a trainer for 4 weeks?

Others here will know better than me but per my understanding from reading is that you’ll probably have to go through the whole thing all over again. And including going out with a trainer. Perhaps you could find a company that might shorten it to a week or two because it truly is like riding a bike. By the end of the first week you’re pretty much going to be close to back to where you left off. That said you definitely want to do some refresher stuff.

I think anything after like two years away, most Companies want you to pretty much go through the school and the training again.

Do you have a cdl now or did you let it go?
    Where is your location?
The reason I ask is because some people only need a DOT physical to reinstate the cdl.
    Ask your DMV about that.

I had to downgrade and i have till nov. to get it back. but if i cant get hired on won't matter. you have to be employed as a cdl driver once you get the dot physical or they take it again. I live in Fl.

actually, your doctor may have something to say about you going back to work as a truck driver.

i had a relative that had a transplant, and his was put somewhere in his groin area just below his stomach, but it's been years, so i cannot fully recall. he was on anti-rejection meds, and had to visit his doctor weekly.

now that was decades ago, and i am sure there have been many advances in this, but, you might want to maybe consider a different line of work, maybe a yardman? if you want to stay with trucking.

then too, what are your chances of that new kidney not failing on you while on the road?

my relative died about 2 years after his transplant. cannot recall why however.

In your case, the state might pay for cdl school through the WIOA program or some rehabilitation program.

you don't need a physical if you downgrade your CDL to intrastate. mine is that way when I retired and my card ran out.

that way you keep it while waiting to go back to work

first of all the docter gave auth to work now if i wanted too. a tranplant means im off disability insurance so I have no choice. and whem your kindney goes, you dont die right away. it takes about 6 weeks more or less for the fluid to buld up in your lungs and heart so you have time to get to the hosp. when mine went i was training a driver and i didnt go to the hosp till i got home. about 2 weeks. i was sick as a dog but i made it
