My question is why would you give up a state paying job and even consider OTR, unless you were an O/O and chasing the freedom.

You can create your own pension in trucking. Invest wisely through a credit union and by rental property.
I know a trucker that's kicked back now living on $10K a month retirement. His son will retire on $20K a month.
Many drivers on this forum are taking care of their own future pension and will be much better off than state or federal employees.

When I retired in Dec 2012 it at first was not to totally retire from working. I was just retiring from active driving. Later I saw I was going to be forced to retire. At first, I considered SSDI in 2012 I was only 54 and was way too young to get regular pensions. So I decided to retire on my own and enjoy a good life financed on my savings and investments. I am 62 now and qualify for an early Social Security pension, but after running the numbers decided to leave it be. I am in the early stages of getting some commercial property in the Atlanta metro area sold. At this point, I have a serious doubt I will ever use my SS benefits.

Beware there are dark storm clouds on the horizon when it comes to social security. As to state pensions, there are some warnings there as well. I won't get much deeper into this as this is not a political forum. Just note, there is going to be some rocky roads ahead!

one thing I’ve done ALL MY LIFE, is find ways to create side incomes. Side hustles. Flipping restaurant equipment, electronics, etc etc. and I’ve done well with it. Only with trucking, I’ve found making a side income virtually impossible. I used to bring in $3-4K monthly on the side selling on eBay etc. I’ve tried to think of way too do it on a truck while OTR and just have accepted it’s all but impossible. OTR is your life, no way around it.

first i think that you are lucky to be having a state job. god only knows the number of times i tried to get on with my state's DOT. you will make far more money during snow storms then you can imagine. this i know, as i worked for a state contractor, and i too did snow plowing.

the pay (regular hourly pay) may not be a whole lot, however, the health benefits and retirement plans are really quite good, compared to the private sector.

i'd say, stay with the DOT, you'll be home daily, many weeks of earned vacations, days off, many times, ALL holidays off, or at the very least DOUBLE TIME if you have to work a holiday.

not too many trucking companies pay all that.

in the end, you may be better off financially and benefits wise., staying at that sweet state job.

I was in Hancock this morning and I noticed you have a Wagner Lumber yard in town. I might look into them if you’re not happy with the DOT job. Being relatively close to NYC and northern NJ, you should have some options as a regional driver for a small or medium sized company. Most large OTR carriers will have similar hiring standards regarding accident histories and may be a tough nut to crack, at least for a few more years.

I would focus on finding a better local or regional job given the current mess we’re in, or figure out a way to deal with the plow work. Good luck.

A lot of these mega companies use these HR formulas to pick drivers. They dehumanize the process. You’re just a stat in a computer model. The reality is they miss a lot of good potential drivers that way and end up with a lot of really bad ones.

Prime rejected my application awhile back because of a suspended license that had happened three years prior in Florida. (I wasn't aware that when you canceled your insurance on a vehicle, regardless of if it's broken down or completely scrapped, that you had to turn in the license plate to the tax collector.)

There are a lot of companies out there, just keep trying.
