expedite_it and flood Thank this. -
They have another 747 outside at street level now too.
I grew up in Portland and remember when the flying boat arrived, It was big news.
It came disassembled on two barges up the coast from Long Beach then down the Columbia River into the Willamette River where it was tied up at the Portland riverfront for at least a few months.
From the ocean to Portland all of the bridges are either tall or draw bridges. They had to wait until the river level was low enough to get under the last few bridges. After that the Goose parts were trucked the rest of the way (probably 10 miles) to McMinnville.Last edited: Feb 13, 2020

Wright Patterson Air Force Museum
The Deerborn (Henry Ford) Museum
There are places in NYC where you can leave a truck and take a subway in. (But I'm not blabbing, you'll just have to find them.)
I took a truck to Hershey once and they were nice enough to let me in (for a charge) but the approach is tricky, I wouldn't recommend it for rookies. (Also, had my kid with me that probably swayed them.)
Indianapolis Motor Speedway, you can go in the infield and visit the museum. Sadly, no laps.
Probably Daytona too, but I've never tried.
Disney in Orlando, I think you just need to call guest services in advance.
Huntsville AL rocket museum
A lot of military museums will make arrangements with truck drivers if you call in advance. I went to a small museum in GA tied to a base in Warner Robbins.
My rainy day wishlist:
(Places I've looked into but haven't gone yet)
Montecello in VA (Jefferson's plantation)
Battleship Iowa
Houston Space Center (I was at the light for the gate and chickened out)
Oh, I should point out that although these are places I've been, they are not truck stops. Some places you have to leave when they close and you can't stay overnight.Leviathan Tube and Cabinover101 Thank this. -
For those who know about the TA in Jessup MD, there are a few bus routes that run past there to get you out and about.
The 501 will get you to both Arundel Mills Mall (where there's also a Dave & Buster's as well as a Live's casino), and Columbia Mall--but they're on opposite ends of the same line to be sure to check with the driver as to which direction its going. That bus stop is on Assateague (the road from which you turn to get into the pumps and the parking lot) on the other side of Pocomoke (the road out front of the fuel pumps), just past the Bank of America branch.
The 320 picks up on Assateague @ Conowingo (in other words, out front of the Country Pride) and runs up to John's Hopkins up in Baltimore City via downtown Baltimore, so if you wanna go check out downtown, the waterfront, the other casino up there, or Camden Yards and whatever the Ravens' stadium is called these days (they're within walking distance of each other), there's your way to do it. As with the previous route, be sure to check the direction the driver is going, because the other end of that line is at Columbia Mall as well.
Now, if you're really ambitious and have time to burn, from downtown Baltimore @ Penn Station you can hop a train down to DC. (Greyhound also runs daily shuttles between Bmore and DC too, boarding from the station downtown Bmore and Union Station IIRC, in DC.)
Whichever the case, check the routes, days and times carefully because some routes only run at specific times. All that info is available thru your Google Maps app, too. I believe bus fare is 1.75 for the 501; the 320 may be the same or a flat 2.00.Truckermania Thanks this. -
Here's a possibly nice one.
Florida I75 (alligator ally) mile marker 30 rest area.
Tons of truck parking and doesn't seem to fill up. Plus, there is an airboat tour company that operates out of the rest area that does 1-2 hour tours. Site says reservations required but walk ups might be accepted if spots are available.
(They operate out of the dock on the north side of the highway, contrary to what google maps shows)

The Sapp Brothers in Denver is a very short Uber ride away from a stand up comedy show at the Denver Improv.
