Here I am 5 years into a glorious driving career and I just plotted a course on Google maps that routes me on US287. I have been through there countless times guided by my GPS and always followed interstate 25 and interstate 80. Is this a viable alternative route for a big truck?
US 287 from Ft. Collins to Laramie vs I25 and I80

A bit hilly and then flat and windy.
The POE near Laramie is usually open and they will probably ask you to bring in paperwork. Maybe not during what's going on now, not sure. You don't need to stop if your going the other way towards FtCollins.MACK E-6 and Crude Truckin' Thank this. -
If your feeling adventurous and want to try a dirt road "shortcut" you can run up to exit 281 and take Owl Canyon Road over to 287. It isn't too bad, but is a good alt route when there is construction going on in FtCollins.
Not sure what is going on with Google, it doesn't take an hour+ to drive 12 miles on a dirt road... Not that one anyway.MACK E-6, Crude Truckin', 86scotty and 2 others Thank this. -

It all depends how you get on or off the 287 near Fort Collins. The company I used to work for routed me through the country club near Budweiser one time. One of those roads I had to yield to traffic that has a stop sign to make that right turn. Then I had to make a jug handle turn in order to miss the telephone pole that's right on the corner.
I haven't really saved any time or fuel taking the 287, but it's a bit more scenic. There's also the possibility that an accident can close the road, especially in the winter, and you'll have to wait until it's cleared since it's a two lane road and no room to turn around. At this point, I would only take it if the customer was pretty much right off that route, or if they closed I-25 N of Ft Collins or I-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie.Crude Truckin' Thanks this. -

I take owl canyon every day. It’s routed in our company’s miles. Dirt road is only like 5-10 mins of driving on it. Way better then Foco unless your going through Foco in the middle of the night. DOT does post up on owl canyon with portables during the day sometimes.

Stay on the interstate.
It ain't worth the trouble.Midnightrider909 Thanks this. -
If you stay on 25 you can blow the scale, if you jump off on the 2 lane there isn’t enough traffic in Laramie to cruise by the port without getting seen.
