As I understand, you need yearly training etc with your current company for your hazmat endorsement. What about if you just get your endorsement and are not employed with a company? I wanna get my haz back just as a backup plan on my license eventually wanna get back into trucking doing line haul.

when i was working, the hazmat training was a company thing, to keep you up to date, and they put that in your file that you have been updated.

when you go to renew your CDL, (at my state) is when i had to take the hazmat test all over again. THAT i needed to pass. the company hazmat training or updating, was an open book test.

i would not worry about an employer's training.

but keep up with the hazmat endorsement at CDL renewal time!!!

I've been maintaining my hazmat on my license for many years and it's been atleast 10 years since i worked for a company that required a hazmat endorsement. All you need is the TSA fingerprinting/background check and to pass the written exam in your state when you renew your license. It's good for 5 years then you have to redo the the TSA part and retake the written test, that's it, every 5 years. The training is a company thing, that's it.

thanks for the info. I thought it was a mandatory thing that you had to show proof of classroom hours or something to DMV ( I drive city bus ) every few years.

Training is provided by your employer as a driver you are not required to do any kind of training to maintain your Hazmat license. JJKeller has training available for a fee, but I would keep the endorsement and not sweat the small stuff, If you go some where that requires real hazmat they will train you on there operation.

well i beg to differ. at CDL renewal time as i had mentioned, we (i) had to retake the hazmat written test, as well as finger-printing. the hazmat training at my employer was an open book test, that they simply put a notation in your file, that you had the mandatory safety class in such updating.

now, IF things have changed since my LAST CDL/hazmat renewal, so be it, i was relating what I HAD to go thru.

Beyond the HM endorsement, haz mat carriers must provide function specific training, job specific training, and HM Security policy training to EVERYONE involved in the transport of Haz Mat. The secretary who orders the bills of lading from the printer, the purchasing guy who orders the hoses, etc.; anyone who is even remotely associated.

Training must begin within 90 days of assuming HM duties and must be repeated every three years.

BTW if anyone besides the owner decides what will be used for training, that authority must be documented, i.e. a signed letter from the owner designating the employee responsible IF this is delegated in any way.

My audit was performed by a haz mat specialist...they know what to look for! The night she asked for our HM records to be left in the conference room as she was coming in early; the letter designating me was on top...I came in at 0750 and she was finished with it...
