You need to ask the Shop about counterbores, that alone can add up to $2000, for all 6. They can’t tell, till the heads off, and liners are pulled. I would interview them a little more, armed with some knowledge, to avoid surprises.

Too bad you weren’t in Detroit, I’d send you to my mechanic. Probably save $2-3k. And get a no BS job.

I meant pistons and sleeves. Rods and mains can be done from the bottom, by dropping oil pan. But cylinder kits, that is, replacing sleeves, rings, and pistons, you need to remove the head. It’s typically $2000 for a head and another $2000, for labor. Might as well spend another $2000, for an OH kit, and $1500 more labor, and have a complete OH. Add $1500 or $2000, for counterboring of the block, if all six holes need to be cut. I was trying to make the point, that you could maybe just replace the head, for $4k, but since it has to come off anyways, might as well do an entire in-frame. You’re basically half way there already, labor wise. I had a new head and gasket done once at 540k, only to have it blow again at 825k, causing the liner to drop, or maybe the liner dropped, and caused the head gasket to blow, either way, I needed a complete OH. You want to avoid that, just get the whole thing done. Cylinders need to be at the proper height above the deck, to get a good long lasting seal from the head gasket. Make sure your Mechanic knows what He’s doing. Any hack can just slap one together, and hope for the best. But correct cylinder height is critical, to avoid a future blown head gasket, and a dropped liner.

Good, ask him about the bull gear. Usually good for at least 1 mil. It’s a $3k job. He can check it fairly easily. That’s about the only catastrophic thing on a 12.7 to avoid. When it fails, it can cost $7k to fix. Damages valves, and all the gears on the front of the motor. He’ll know what’s best.
