$550 is what 99% pay, they need the money and will use it wisely.

I've yet to fathom exactly why we are awarded the privelege of giving the IRS $550/year for owning a piece of machinery.

I get the forms on line. Print them out and mail in. My friend pays on line through a website but it costs a minimal fee. Not hard to fill out. 550 bucks if your plated for 80,000 lbs. Costs me time, a stamp, envelope, and a check. Of course the 550. Oh and its been 550 for quite a fee years now.

Goes with the truck. If you buy a different truck, the previous owner should give you his receipt as proof he paid it. You will need it to plate it, or pay the 2290 for that truck also. Do believe the fee is prorated some.

Is it that hard to fill out the form?
Do I need to educate myself because the questions are not clear for new operators? Is there too much jargon?

And does the new year starts in July or August?

Period runs July 1 thru June 30th. Due by the end of August. To file you will need a EIN number also. Its a 9 digit number. When you download forms they will let you know that. Also i think included in the form papers there is info how to get that EIN number. When i file i end up sending them 5 pages. I keep a 6th page that has my check on it and the payment voucher on it.(I make copies to keep on file) Don't let the amount of pages startle you. Some have hardly any work done on them.

Is there any way I can check what was paid so far? When I was opening up, someone helped with the start-up documents. Charged $40 to file 2290. I never got a receipt from the IRS though what months were paid for. I don't know if it's due to Covid-19 that I never got it--it didn't come at all. Or the person who did it initially never did it or kept a receipt in their file. I opened up last February.
