This is my biggest fear running reefer. I catch myself waking up every 2-3 hours to see if the reefer is still running.
Have any of you have your reefer shutoff while sleeping? Wether it be a mechanical problem or someone shutting it off.
Have you spoiled a load this way?
Have you ever had a reefer shut off while you were sleeping?

Yes. Fuel filter got plugged in the winter. Got out of bed and fixed. If you have a satellite temperature monitoring system, alerts can be sent to your phone. $18/month is worth the peace of mind, and worth the proof that your reefer maintained temp. I carry spare stuff that I can do easily on the spot: fuel filter, jumper cables, starter, and alternator. I needed all of them at least one time in my 20 years of pulling a reefer.

Happened, yes, no claims for it. I hear the old classic firing up driving down the road. Only in the noisiest environments do I not hear it failing to run while resting.
Hot weather is harder to deal with. Heats the trailer up more quickly.Canadianhauler21 Thanks this. -
BTW...for a spare alternater and starter, I would look to go through a rebuilder to save 1/2 the exorbant cost of purchasing from a dealer. I bought a new/used reefer in December. 1st week out, the starter went while in start/stop mode. I hadn't gotten a spare yet, and my spare from my old Ultima 53 wouldn't work. Fortunately I was only 80 miles from a dealer. $400+ for the starter only. I took my old starter to a rebuilder in my town I've used before, and he got me a new one for $200 approximately.

I woke up at midnight once in the hot California desert and noticed the reefer had stopped. Got out my flashlight and checked it out and noticed the belt had come off the pulley, so reinstall it and tighten it up and good to go. Another reason to carry a tool bag with you.

I do power only for a company and I look at it this way. If they don't want to send us an alert saying hey ur refer is +70 on a -10 load while I'm sleeping that's on them.

Yes, I remember the event well. I pulled into a big parking lot for a diner/bar late afternoon in Clarksville, Tn. I was waiting for my co-pilot to come off his home time. The load was "on time". I drank and ate and went to bed but and slept until noon ! Which I never do ! Always up at sunrise or before. The unit was off. Had run out of fuel. Had to refuel it and pull the fuel filter to prime it. I can't remember what the product was. But it was not harmed.

Oh yeah...few times. The battery went bad once and another time the motor just stalled out. The battery was replaced for the other one, it was a matter of clearing the code and restarting it
There was another time when the fuel line was damaged. All of which weren't difficult repairs.Sirscrapntruckalot and Canadianhauler21 Thank this. -
I had a reefer quit on me while I was asleep, I jumped out of bed so fast you would have thought I was shot. The fact that it stopped woke me up out of a sound sleep.
