Great, now those idiots trying to get government involved in policing freight rates are going to make a come back.

I've personally found it much easier to just charge a lot during good times so I can sit at home without a worry for 3 months while everyone else works cheap and runs themselves out of business. I think I've worked 6 months in the last year, all with a truck payment.

You must be into heavy haul. I doubt you pulling a van or flatbed running like that and you must have 0 debt

I maybe getting you mixed up with someone else but you have a dispatch service that takes a cut off the posted rates correct?

Oversize usually, but did the same thing hauling fuel as well.

It all comes down to saving when things are good to get through when things are bad. There will always be something bad that happens, so you always have to be prepared. I've had a lot of life lessons on this between my personal ability to get injured and economic cycles. I've watched a lot of people who make the same exact thing I do fail purely from their inability to financially manage a business.

Yes, I lease to a company with 100-150 trucks. I pay them 12% from gross + 950 cargo and liability insurance + 160 occupational ins +30$ ELD. have my own plates, IFTA, and non trucking liability insurance.
They do it well, but I'm working with the loadboard very intensive so I can say that I have 1,5 dispatch just for me).

I was talking to a guy who does specialized hauling told me he stays out 6 months and makes enough to take off the other 6 months. I totally agree with you about being financially responsible you can’t spend frivolously and expect to be successful in this business

Saying no to cheap freight is like pleading to the moon to stop shining. The market gives the rates and you either take it or sit at home. How long you can sit home before taking cheap rates is the question that everyone answers to themselves. Nobody is powerful enough to outmaneuver the market rates by a lot.
