Mercer Now requiring contractors to install omnitracs cameras

It appears more and more of these carriers who have lease operators running under their authority and insurance are requiring this.

Many are including that "mobile eye" deal as well.

Driver facing camera + lawyers =

Yawning on camera prior to accident = fatigued driver, shouldn't have been driving.

Changing radio station/air conditioning, eating, drinking, chewing gun, talking on bluetooth, looking at Qualcomm while driving etc etc = "distracted driving" gonna sue you hard and you are at fault for everything.

Driver facing cameras are a legal nightmare

 

They didn't require the mobile eye till a year after i was working here. It's how they kept our insurance rates down with everything going on. The Mobile eye unit it just in cab alert doesn't send alerts to them and doesn't save anything. I was one of the testers for the mobile eye and its decent. It doesn't hit ur brakes or stop the cruise just beeps every couple seconds if u follow too close or leave a lane without a blinker lol

 

Insurance rates have gone up for A LOT of people this year if u could save .01 per mile on a truck by installing mobile eye i sure as hell would. I Draw the line at driver facing cameras

 

Just to be clear, the unit Mercer is requiring does not have driver facing camera in it, so they can't "turn it on" as some have suggested. It also does not record sound.

 

What about the guys who are grandfathered in that are on paperlogs?

 

Recently Safety Director Len Dunman revised the Mercer Safety Policy to include the rollout of OmniTracs cameras. Please take a minute to read some important information about this new policy. The primary reason for this new policy is related to obtaining insurance and obtaining it at reasonable costs. Insurance carriers make their decisions on 'when to offer coverage' and 'what to charge' based on the technology on trucks including cameras. We believe we are compelled to move forward with this new camera policy in order to obtain insurance coverage in the future.

A few important points about the cameras and how they work or will be used:

Cameras are Forward Facing Only.
There is NO Audio being recorded.
There is NO real time view available to us. In other words, we can't watch you going down the road.
Your speed does NOT show on the videos that are requested by Mercer.

Important recording information:

The cameras are active when there is Motion in Front of the camera. This could be very helpful in 'truck stop' accidents where someone backs into your rig.
In the event of an actual accident or incident, we will be able to review the video. Such video can clearly help defend you or clear you of any wrongdoing.
You can also trigger the camera to record by pushing a button or simply waving your hand next to the camera.
Finally, if you want to see a video recording, simply call Safety and ask. We will upload it and send it to you.

 

If its ONLY FORWARD camera , honestly I don't know what you guys crying around. My dash cam works 24/7 cause with all this texting idiots on a road , you never know what going to happen next minute. Especially with scammes, who can slam on brakes and you will be fined for rear end collision.
Now inward camera, for monitoring driver is completely different topic...

 

You gotta keep up, folks aren't crying about a camera. Its who controls that camera.


Their is a big difference in a camera that I own and have control of versus a company owned camera that they control.
