Right now I make $10/hr. In two months when I move up into management I'll make $11/hr. I don't know of anywhere in which that is a living wage.

That's good info but what is a "crappy wage" in your opinion? Right now I'm facing $1700/mo gross. Of course that's just with one job, 40 hours a week. I'll have to take on a second job just to make ends meet. And that's with nothing to retire on except social security. Summary: a life of scrimping and borderline poverty. Even $3k/mo gross would be like hitting the lottery at this point. And I do have 14 years experience so I understand what I'm getting into. I've forgotten things, though, such as how team driving and regional don't mix.
I came here to ask stupid questions and get good answers.

    1)
You may also want to try & get a civil service job with either the federal government, the state, the county, or the city / town.
    2) Upon retirement, you would probably get a civil service retirement pension, in addition to your Social Security. It's worth a try.

Good luck to you and your entire family.

I'm in my first year, but did a significant amount of research prior to taking the OTR job I have now. I paid for my own school. I got offers from 4 of the 5 companies I applied at. It's hard to know for certain what the companies that I didn't go with would have paid, but the offers were typically in the $800 to $1100 a week range gross, factoring the offer with potential bonuses.

As for the company I did go with, I'm pulling down average $938 per week gross, with bonuses. I'm not getting rich, but I'm happy. You should be able to get your 3K per month without issue, if you go OTR. But there are many options out there. Do lots of research. The job you pick, you should stay at for at least a year. Someone I trust suggested 2 years, before being able to open up the good jobs.

Another suggestion is Tyson Foods out of Springdale Arkansas. Texas is in their hiring area. The company is known for paying their drivers well, with excellent benefits, and DECENT respect for their truck drivers. The job is worth looking into.

    Their email address is HRISSupport@tyson.com.

If I was able to pass a DOT physical, I would have gone to a truck driving school to learn how to drive a truck. I would have also liked to have worked for an OTR company driving all 48 states and Canada. Tyson Foods would have been one of my top choices.

Do a year with a training company that helps you get a cdl.
After a year, look at Great Plains Transport which pays salary of $1200.00 weekly.
Great Plains Transport Is Looking for a Few Good Guys and Gals…
At Great Plains Transport, we look at our over the road (OTR) truck drivers differently than most transportation companies. We see you as people first and drivers second. Our President makes a point of getting to know every single person by name. This drive comes from our origins as a family run business, and because he knows his drivers are his biggest asset. It’s also because we believe it’s not hard to be a good person.
Just a few of our benefits include:
    • Base Salary Starting at $65,000! ($1250 weekly plus bonus) No gimmicks no more small checks!
    • Bonuses – Up to $1,000 Per Month

Thank you but for many, many reasons a civil service job is impossible for me.

Thanks! One of my early OTR jobs was Cannon Express out of Springdale. I'll look into it.
