Question about Texas rattlesnakes!!!

OP, also make sure you know what a fire ant nest looks like, and be VERY CAREFUL not to step on one!

I thought I would see a lot of snakes on the road, alive or dead, in states like Arizona and Texas and the South. I guess the birds clean them up quick as soon as they get run over.

The only time I've seen a snake was in October in North Dakota of all places. I thought it was a piece of tire until it started moving right before I ran it over.

One more thing. One time I was hooking up to a trailer at the yard in Laredo in the dark. I went under to check the kingpin and a frog jumped up right in front of me. Scared the **** out of me. It could have just as easily been a rattlesnake. Something else to watch out for.

 

Can get chewed on by those Coral snakes down there.... Pretty red and Black little boogers.

 

Even if you are walking around in the bush and "surprise" a rattlesnake, they will turn and go in the opposite direction a few feet, and then take a defensive posture to start buzzing thier rattle.

People do get bit by them, but not many. I wouldn't worry about them too much. Just be aware they could be around.

 

there's snakes everywhere.

mts of NY, where I grew up had timber rattlers and copper heads.
Fla had a crap load of rattlers on the golf courses I worked on, in the Palm Bch and lake Worth area. water moccasins in the freakin' trees .too.those suckers attack in packs!
here in NC there are timber rattlers in the mts and copper heads.
when I lived in Wyoming they had rattlers too.

never been bit, but had the crap scared out of me a few times. a pistol with bird shot does wonders on them.

Late 50's, 1st trip west, teaming.. Pulled in to Sheriff's Western Texaco TS, 1st place past Las Cruces scales going west. All hard, dry gravel lot except pump stands. Edgar wheeled in and looped around back.
Told me to bump the tires on my side as we got out to go in to eat and change shifts.
Ate, coming back out he said watch your step and jump up on the tractor step, May be snakes around.
True... Cool nights the rattlers came in out of the desert and coiled around your hot tires.
So, bump them when stopped on the graveled / roadside places and step high getting back in.

 

Do it with a 12 ga pump gun. Plug out, #8 bird shot, empty the tube and walk away whistling.

Apparently the live in the Okanagan/southern BC. Never seen one in person. Seen tons of non-venomous snakes though.
