Dispatchers have heard every reason in the book for drivers to be home. Probably half are valid. The funniest I ever heard (while sitting at my dispatchers desk) was a driver calling in saying he was out of hours. Asked where he was, he said he was at the house !

You don’t have to tell them your reason if you’re putting in 2weeks in advance. They just need to know that you need to be home and have some business to handle. I would pullover now put in the hometime now while they’re in the office today, then follow up with a phone call tomorrow. You run your hours but remember the office folk go home in the rush hours. So if you wait till later today. It’ll be the same as putting it in tomorrow at 8am.

You don't have to tell them the reason and I wouldn't if it was for a Doctor appt or something else personal. But in this case telling them the real reason will probably help make sure they get you home. And keep reminding them every couple a days and then every day when it get closer. Make sure you don't take a load that is taking you the wrong direction when time get close either.

Well, back surgery is not very difficult. If it's lower back I was up walking around the next morning. They may not perceive this to be as concerning as you do, but never hurts to ask.

My grandpa passed away in the hospital late last year and I wasn’t there; he was fine the night before when I talked to my mom, but something with his surgery went bad so needless to say I’m not taking any chances lol

Right now 2 weeks out, this is really not a family emergency. It is more like a special hometime request to handle a private family matter. This is all I would tell my company!

Ah I went ahead and told them it was about my mom, makes it more personal imo and only an a hole would lie about something like that; appreciate everyone clarifying this isn’t a family emergency, exactly why I post my questions here first before looking like an idiot
