So I've been doing dry van/reefer for almost 3 years now and I love my company, but I guess I'm bored. I keep thinking about trying out tanker. I don't know specifically what I want to haul, but I want to try out pulling tankers.

Feel free to let me know why I shouldn't or why I should make the switch and maybe if hauling certain materials would be better than others. Recommendations for companies to start with are also welcome.

I've been doing food grade tanker for about 2 months. There are pros and cons to food grade. The biggest pros are no brokers to deal with, the trailers are shorter so little easier parking at truck stops, having said that nearly every shipper and receiver I have been to allows parking on site. They also seems to treat tankers better than the general freight trucks. My job is 100% no touch freight. The most that has been required of me is climbing up to open or close the top hatch and most places will handle that themselves. No sweeping trailers ever again.

The biggest cons are low miles, product surge that absolutely batters you at times and long waiting times getting loaded and unloaded and at trailer washouts. If you get loaded at dairy farms they tend to be muddy messes that stink.

Chemical/hazmat seems to pay more going by what you read on here so if you can start there, I would suggest that.

It too has its ups and downs. But I would say the feeling of rolling by parked lines of reefers at a grocery DC is a feeling of satisfaction on its own. I'm with food-grade myself, but it's always good to branch out beyond your current choice of haul. Looking to utilize my HAZMat creds sometime in the near future.

Easiest trucking job I've had is tankers. Pulled hazmat tankers coast to coast.

Currently over here right now. Not that bad and they do keep you on some dedicated lanes if you desire so. Been with them for five years now and they've done me quite well.
