So I just bought a truck that I’m going to be driving about 6 months from now. I’m going to be needing to drive it around my city to certain mechanics to do things that need to be done. I currently have no signs or a DOT numbers on it and i won’t even be hooking up a trailer to it.

I have insurance but I haven’t “registered” it because I’d need to show that it’s leased to some company to get the cab card registration. I’m in Georgia and I’m wondering what is my best option to be able to drive this legally?

Why can't you just go ahead and get your plates now? Is the truck in your name or are you leasing it from a leasing company? You do know you can get a cab card and plates yourself using a business tax ID. Once you get your plates you can do whatever you want and go whereever you want.

To make that thing driveable down the road without numbers on the side of the door you need an Inspection sticker, IFTA sticker, Plates, Registration, and Insurance.

so I’d need to get a business tax id and then I’d be able to get everything else?

Oh I misunderstood I thought you already had your own authority. Did you buy the truck with cash? Do you the have the title? Did you buy the truck from a dealer or a private party?

In order to obtain IFTA, Registration, Inspection, and Plates you either have to apply for IRP in your DOT number or use the companies DOT number your leasing to. Since you don't have a company your leasing to at this current moment you can try to apply for a temporary registration but those are only good for like 10 days not 6 months.

Yes I own the truck outright and I bought it from a private party.

Do I need to have full active authority to be able to get registration and IFTA stickers? I can’t just get a USDOT # and have it be inactive?

You do not need authority to get a registration and IFTA IF you are leasing onto someone but, you stated that your not leasing onto someone for like 6 months so at this point the only way to get a registration and IFTA is with your own DOT #. You can't ride around with an inactive DOT# legally, now I'm not telling you what to do or what not to do but, to make it legal just to ride around in you need plates along with insurance.

Don't you have a buddy or something you use his DOT# temporarily just to get a plate.

Thanks for the information. I’ll ask around and see if some of my friends would be able to help out. I don’t like asking for help but it looks like I’ll have too.

To get plates you need active authority OR a signed lease from a company that does.....

    And a 2290 ....

    There is your information.

A hunter permit is for driving a truck without a trailer or load.
You can legally drive your truck to get mechanic work accomplished. Not to work the truck.
    Good luck
