I have a 2012 Freightliner Cascadia with 10 speed Eaton Fuller and today I noticed a weird winding noise when I go from 10th gear down to 9th and 8th on the highway when I stepped off the accelerator, the noise would come on about every 2 seconds and would go away when I would step on the accelerator again. Could it be low transmission fluid or differential issue?

    Thanks

    A a 10 speed doesn't have a torque converter.

You could check the oil in the trans. Does it do it at high rpm..or low rpm. Does anything vibrate up through the gear shift? Is it doing it with engine brake on or off? Have had exhaust clamps break and certain rpms caused a weird vibrating noise. If you have any mechanical ability get under and look things over. U joints, bell housing bolts, loose exhaust pipes or clamps. Thats the thing with trucks. Is it a 50 dollar noise or a 5,000 dollar noise.?

You might check the brake fluid as well lol

you’re clutch will take dot 4 I do believe, yea some trucks at least actually take brake fluid, that’s more of a grinding noise and usually only during operation and probably not it but I think it’s best to cover everything you can before you decide It’s inside the transmission itself and have freightliner tear your truck apart at $150 an hour and being your only hearing it in the gears that get the most use........ but a surprisingly high amount of things on these trucks (especially air valves) can be visible or audibly malfunctioning and still not be the problem.

Also are you pushing on the shifter or when this happens? Or even have your hands on it

I always have my hand on the shifter but I try not to apply any pressure

It sounds like a 50 dollar noise but hopefully that's not wishful thinking. My front differential needed an oil change and I did that and I haven't heard it yet after that and it only happened to me while I was loaded.
