No IRP/IFTA, under 26,001 State specific permits

Quite a few states out west make you stop and buy a trip permit at the first open scalehouse.

Off the top of my head Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. California, Utah, Colorado I don’t think so. This is only if you don’t have an IRP registration and stay under 26k.

NYS I’m not sure if you need a HUT if under 26k. Just try to avoid that state and everything east of it if you can lol.

 

Ny HUT is from 18k.

 

Yeah, pretty sure that’s how it is. I was pulling campers with my 1-ton last summer from Indiana back to WA, under 26k obviously and no IRP but since it was commercial hauling I had
to buy the permit in MT ($20), ID ($60) and WA ($25). Most states you just stop at the first open scalehouse and walk in and buy it but some states are a pain in the butt and make you do it online and print it out. (WA was one of them.) Company I hauled for reimbursed me for those expenses though.

 

Had nothing to do with IFTA as far as I know. My truck is registered for 26k max and had a WA base plate. It also depends on your base plate I think since some states have “reciprocity” and won’t make you buy a trip permit. It’s a patchwork of stuff you just have to figure out if you run that lane just like how it was in the old days before IRP registration got rid of most of that hassle for big trucks.

I can get out my company handbook and take some photos of the states with trip permit requirements. I’ll post them later.

 

Couldn't find the explanation page for NV and NM but that first one tells you all the states out west that require them.
