i have to ask you, and dont be ashame if its the case. Are you afraid of a big truck in any which way? I can get a triaxle in anywhere. You can to. Just takes a fe more turns and pull ups. IF you go wit a tandem, you might as ell go with a tri. You wold be amazed a how much a load of shingles or construction materials can way if packed in with an excavator. With a tri, ou wont have to worry about guessing and you will avoid fines which cost about 1 dollar per pound over. With a sngle axle, you will spend a lot of time refusing loads and wasting your time. Just my opinion. Trash is competetive and yeah ou can make money but you have to be committe to expand and buy a bunch of dumpsters to where at somepoint, you have them spread out and people wont them swapped out and you doing that all day every day. Its a big committment. My fam was in the roll off bussiness for years until they sold out to the big companies. I got into the triaxle dump bussiness. Locally its a a cash cow around here.

Not afraid, more so just want to make sure I buy a capable truck so I don’t limit myself for future growth. It sure would be nice if our dump fees at the transfer stations were lower but not much you can do about that. After dump fees there should be a little left, not a ton though. I don’t expect to become rich but hopefully can add a little bit of extra income to my main job at the moment.

At the end of the day, it’s all about doing something you enjoy doing. Trash is very fun in my opinion. Always was. Running triaxle dump is fun too and that’s why I’m doing it. So if you can get the ball rolling and make enough to make ends meet than why not? You will be just fine with a triaxle. Don’t even consider a tandem. The lift axle won’t restrict you in any way. Single axle, forget about it. People will call you and you will have to reject numerous loads because you can’t handle the weight. Get a tri and not worry

That is very true. You have to do what you love! I know some people that have dump trucks and do asphalt and love it. Of course the year I want to buy a truck and get started it seems like we’re going to enter a recession. The way the market keeps dropping closer and closer to recession because of the Corona virus, I’m starting to question if I should wait until next year. It would suck to invest all this money, market crashes and then no one needs dumpsters

Well at this time due to the current situation ( sickness and economy) I’ve decided to hold off on getting into this business until possibly next spring. But only time will tell. I’ll keep this thread updated as soon as I know something

    Chubby Fly Thanks this.

So I’ve done a bit of thinking and I may go a different route. I’m considering getting a pickup truck and a Rolloff trailer, just a thought at the moment, insurance, registration will be a lot cheaper. I would them upgrade to a Rolloff truck hopefully within a year if the business is successful.

Still sitting here, trying to see how covid is going to affect the economy. I still can’t decide if I want to get into it this year or not. I am torn. I’m afraid to see what fall brings..

RollOffMan87, Good evening. I was in the process of purchasing a roll off business but the deal fell through as the business partners selling just couldn't agree on various aspects. The business, located in the central Florida area, has 5 trucks, dumpsters from 10-40 in size, etc. and a net yearly profit of around 400k. There is actually more business in the area than they can handle as they are often out of dumpsters but aren't willing to put anything into the business as they are selling. I considered starting a franchise and although there are many positives such as knowledge, experience, bulk purchasing, policies, procedures, etc. there are just as many disadvantages with one of the primary disadvantages being you can ONLY do things their way. So, if you decide to add portable toilets or just do something slightly different, you are in violation of their policies not to mention that nowdays if corporate does something politically wrong, etc. it will easily impact all franchisees. Therefore, I am looking for a consultant (no luck on google) and/or systems, procedures, etc. (The good stuff from a franchise) while still being able to remain an independent. I am not trying to get something for nothing but do need decent advice and/or direction in order to find a consultant in this specific industry if possible. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am big on customer service, under promising and over delivering, etc. and just believe that a private business with the information on day one that a franchise provides would be the best of both worlds. Therefore, I am looking for a consultant (no luck on google) and/or systems, procedures, etc. (The good stuff from a franchise) while still being able to remain an independent.
