Why are city drivers always grouchy?

Doing what I can, I have pulled out of docks and bays or waited and let some LTL guys go ahead of me. Some of us understand your jobs and appreciate it. If I'm getting a full truckload what is 15 minutes to let you go infront of me. Especially if your decent. However had one bone head run his mouth that thought he had the right to hit the dock before me. I choose to say no. Inform him he is union paid by the hour and to F/O. He was pissed. Asked how much I had on and I told him 14 skidded coils and one stand up. As he stomped back to his truck, they towmotor unloaded one skid. He never asked how many I was delivering. I was in and out in 7 minutes.

 

The difference is a Local truck may have 20 or 30 stops he has to get handled in a day, vs a OTR truck typically has 1 or 2. a lot of receiver have a dock set aside for local deliveries.

 

I get called in to do loads for car/auto parts manufacture at times night loads are a cake walk, but day loads if I can't get right in and out I skip the delivery and they don't get the product till the next day.

 

Wow I never thought to send it back! I just leave it there.

 

I did route driving for car quest. There was 5 drivers and we had a set run. All done at night. Each store got 1-3 pallets and we had a lift gate and keys to the stores. Mine was 13 stops and 450 miles.

Just about when I was hired they went to a set pay scale for the route instead of hourly. Supposedly with the 5 drivers they saved over 45 hours of overtime a week.

 

I hate the "It's not my job mentality" of some local drivers. Get the ##### job done.
Some drivers won't run to the shop and get something fixed. Instead they write it up and let others deal with it.
What happened to having the other guys back? When you work with a good crew everything is just so much easier.

I drove locally in the CA bay area and when you deal with the areas OTR drivers avoid all day it can get stressful. Hyper alert all day is mentally tiring.

 

At our barn, the p&d drivers have had meltdowns constantly, for all the reasons that have been posted. I want nothing to do with it. Linehaul and cool as a cucumber!!!
