On the lead in to 60 minutes tonight they showed a full blown semi driverless truck. Then they cut away to some guy, and he said by 2021 there will be a fleet of them on the highways. Get someone to tape it if you can't watch it. Posted at 6:05.

Anyone else waiting for the chaos?

If you're under 50 I'd start looking for a new career

I'm still not worried. Heck, I hope most of these so called drivers are replaced! There will always be a job in trucking for those of us who want one.

Man, the BS was flowing. But the guy (didn't catch his title or name but I taped it), said they will be more fuel efficient because they stay perfectly in their lane. Went on to say they are testing them at a secret place in Arizona. If they are still testing in wide open spaces I think it will be years before we see them in any populated areas. And guess who else will be out of work? DMs. No drivers, no need for anyone to handle them. Just program A-B and sit back. I bet THEY haven't even considered this. But a group of truckers in a roundtable type discussion brought up some good points. A female trucker said in Ocala last week there was a wreck and a State Trooper was directing traffic. She wondered if these trucks could handle hand signals? I had been under the impression there would always be a CDL driver on board but this guy says not. Now we will have the scabs that wait at the docks like tugboats waiting on ships so they can dock them. No way they let those things around crowds of people walking around. But he got his shots in at the drivers. Said the computer doesn't text or drive drunk. What a pile of dung.

I think they would be great on private property where the owner can accept responsibility for any and all issues created by faulty a.i.
    As for public highways...
How will they handle a rockslide? A weaving motorhome? Trailer flat? Bad u-joint? Crosswinds? Road grime on sensors? Being cutoff in icy conditions?

I'm not convinced that a computer is capable of driving with the feel for worn parts, mountain driving in poor conditions, intuition of recognizing changes in traffic such as zero oncoming vehicles on a two lane(reason to suspect stopped traffic ahead) or even the ability to pull off to assist a fellow driver.
There's quite a few reasons to question the saftey of self driving trucks in my opinion.

On the subject of job loss, I think it would be massive. All of the truck stops would become fueling centers....No more CDL schools...Job reduction at DOT and DMV...The effect this would have on unemployment is almost hard to imagine... What would happen to the Teamsters ? I know that this is an extreme view but I also think that we should remember all of the manufacturing jobs that no longer exist.

Autonomy_Graphic-1024x683.png Every time this topic comes up, and you get a company using 60 minutes to spend time on what is a press release, they confuse everyone with mumbo jumbo. It is all to sell the idea to investors, nothing more.
This graphic might make it more understandable. level 5 autonomous trucks, those with no driver on board at all are decades away, unless they have their own dedicated lanes.

And as good as the US is with keeping infrastructure updated and maintained, we are centuries away from having dedicated lanes except in very specific places....
