I see New York requires lift axles be steerable, however it appears that only applies to divisible overweight permits. I'm assuming non divisible Heavy Haul loads are okay with non steerable? Also are there any states other than New York that have restrictions on lift axle type?

What is the benefit of nonsteerable over steerable? I see a lot of new trucks running non steerable.

Non steerable have a lot less moving parts, shocks, bushings, etc to wear out over time. On the flip side if you have a drive with a non steerable that is loaded heavy and you have a careless driver not lifting it on sharp slow speed turns you are going to have tire and bushing issues alot sooner on it as well.

One plus that comes to mind. Depending on your steer tire configuration. You can move the steers to the pusher axle position to get more mileage out of those stupid expensive tires that just don't last in the steer position.

I believe ny state law about lift axle being steerable has to do with the year the trailer was built......

I forget the year but older trailers don’t have to be steerable.... or you can have a solid tri-axle .... no lift and it doesn’t have to steer.

The pin-on to the red XL I pull occasionally is self-steering. But locks in place for backing up or other needs. Obviously this axle doesn't lock what is a cool concept for steerable axles. 20200901_093615.jpg

All of our stretch trailers are self steering. They usually are steering about a foot to the right when stretched and we don’t have any control over them!

If you are going to be crossing Utah with non-divisible loads a non-steerable will exclude you from the routine permits etc...

Been in and out of Utah hundreds of times with a non steerable pusher and have never had trouble permitting a load.
