I have an interview tomorrow for some regional heavy haul van work going up and down I-5. I have 2 years of OTR reefer experience and really don't know much about the heavy haul side. Anything I should know going in?

Yes. I think they go up to 105,000. Not certain about that though.

There's not too many heavy haul van companies, can I take a guess that you're interviewing with Wilson Logistics?

Either way, I can probably help you out a little. Sorry to get here so late, but I've been busy with my boys since I have them for a couple weeks, and now school starts tomorrow.

What do you need to know?

    C_Scrutinizer and 062 Thank this.

Memorize the bridge charts and know what your 7 axle inner bridge is, and know the differences when it comes to how OR figures their bridge. That will save you some headache because with an 8 axle truck you will bridge out in OR before you hit 105k gross.

It's with Gardner. I guess I was curious about scaling, turning and backing a trailer with 4 axles. I did ask about all that at the interview and it does sound like a bit of a pita.

Anyway, there are things I like. Early morning start times. Home most nights. Weekends off. Hourly. I did a basic backing test with a standard tandem axle trailer and pee'd in a cup. Got a couple other things I'm looking into. There's some good tanker / hazmat jobs around but I got to wait till late October to get endorsements.

    JReding Thanks this.

Couple of the trailer axles probably lift.... I wouldn’t think backing would be a problem......

More than likely three solid axles and a lift axle in back. If so, ALWAYS lift that back axle before backing, you risk tearing those tires up if you leave them down if you've got a stout load. And make sure your tractor drop axle lifts automatically before you back up as well. If it doesn't (some older styles don't), definitely be sure to lift that one!

Also, as far as drop axle pressures, bridge weights, etc, it sounds confusing on paper, but once you put it into actual practice, it's not hard to learn.

C_Scrutinizer and Long FLD Thank this.
