Is this brake on my steer a DOT violation unsafe?

    Why do you say that? Why would people #### with someone on a forum like this that is made specifically for getting guidance on questions like this?

    Brake shoe overhang like that is usually caused by worn mounting pins. A lot of times when doing brakes guys will get lazy and leave the old pins in the spider. A proper brake job should solve that, although I wouldn’t do anything until the shoes are worn out.

    Yup that’s exactly what causes it, pins and bushings.Where I live they won’t pass your dot safety inspection if they hang out any, gotta fix em before you get a sticker
