Look at Schneider, Werner and Landstar Broker, they have power only loads, as does Prime INC, and at Prime you get to use their fuel card for discounts. New trailers always being shipped from UT and VA and AR, just watch the load boards, but sometimes new trailers do not pay a lot. A heavy duty pintle hook can come in handy on power only at times.

Power only is typically cheap, and it usually takes a bit to find the freight that pays well. If you want to diversify, you'll want a winch bar for tightening straps for flatbed loads. You might want extra straps as well, in case they don't have them or their straps are damaged. Sometimes there are oversize power only moves, so you'll want all the flags and signage required, as well as knowing your routes and permits. Another load that pops up periodically are pintle hitch moves. If you have a receiver that you can swap from pintle to ball, as well as properly converting your wiring for lights, you can haul travel trailers and boats. Some customers have lift gates, which might require additional wiring to power it.

It's a lot of effort, and usually the good paying freight is not consistent enough. Plus the cost of non-owned/trailer interchange is usually more than just insuring your own trailer. There can be times the trailer has no registration, plates, or DOT inspection. There could be times where the trailer needs to be worked on before it can safely move. I've even had a load out trailer advertised as a 53' with swing doors, and end up being a 48' with roll doors, making it harder to find freight. People are customizing trailers with flanges and attachments that put it over the legal dimensions, and expecting you to haul it without a permit or pay out of your pocket.

I've made more money with a trailer than doing power only.

It really depends what you want to haul. I would recommend starting out in a dry van, as there is plenty of dry van work

I think dry van would probably be ideal for me to start with the more i think about it. Is there anything to look for when it comes to renting a trailer? I know there's a local outfit that does rent dry vans and i know they are reputable.

Also, thanks everyone for the input so far. This has been very helpful

Power only is a tough deal.
I never understood why people don’t just spend 15 to 20k on a nice, mostly maintenance free trailer and make far more money.

I am just nervous about overextending myself as well. I have a decent amount of money ready for this journey but I'm still nervous about having payments on equipment. I will be trying to avoid that as much as possible but i'm sure i will be making plenty of mistakes as i start out so I want to have as much liquid cash for emergencies as i can. I can fix a lot of things myself if the tools i have can do it but i am not a diesel engine mechanic.
