I haul liquid nitrogen NA 1977 in bulk , I was dispatched to a repair facility and was asked to pump off 7k gallons into a refrigerated methane tanker with a placard of 1972 flammable in which I refused , my argument was that it was illegal to push a load of Nitrogen onto the methane tanker .Any responses would be appreciated.

    There are a couple considerations.
First, is product quality. But that's not your problem.
Second, is it safe. Is there a possibility that the nitrogen will cause issues with the methane tanker. Is transferring product like this safe. This is your problem.
Third, as far as placards go, you could have just slapped nitrogen placards on the other truck. (If there was still some methane left and the tanker had not been somehow purged of residue then keeping the methane placard on as well (in addition to nitrogen) would be the safe bet. Plus hand the other driver a copy of the BOL.

What did your company say when you called them? They're the ones that sent you there with a loaded trailer for repairs. The nitrogen would have probably negated any of the methane fumes but I don't know if the quality of the nitrogen would been affected.

all depends on why.....pump it over instead of allowing it to bleed off [takes a long time!] and then they let that unit bleed it off. I wouldn't expect to reuse it...

I remember an O2 cyro unit overturned on the NJ Turnpike. It was closed for a week while it bled off to the atmosphere. Couldn't pump it out onto the asphalt covered ground.

Head of the NJ DEP emergency response said all the needed to do was dump sand and then pump it off...would have saved days...

    O2 and petroleum = explosion....

Thanks drivers for all your responses .My safety department has sided with me saying even though the dropped trailer was not used outside the plant it has to have a flipped placard on it to reflect what's inside of it .

When someone , especially in your company tells you to do something like that ALWAYS get the name of that person.
And if you have a question, call your safety office.

The winning answer. When in doubt get safety involved.

You had doubts and I understand asking if you never done it before but were they wanting to do this to make the methane trailer inert with the nitrogen?

Nitrogen is a noble gas, it's inert. But the methane is still methane, they won't react together, your just mixing/diluting it with nitrogen.

I am not a cryo driver but I will not transfer anything placarded into a different placard tank. Did not go to chemistry school so... no, sir. I am not doing it.
