He figured he was dying he had nothing to lose at that point. Might as well enjoy the short time he had left doing something he enjoyed.

Someone mention Triumph? I Bought a sad looking but salvageable
1957 Triumph TR-3 convertible, and spent 3 years in the 1980's restoring it. First, (and only,) car w/wire wheels I ever owned,
previous owner removed TR-3 4 cyl. - and put a TR-6 six cyl. in it.
Just barely fit. Fitted with Lucas, (Prince of Darkness,) electrics.
Previous owner also made it an abortion of a flip front front end.He went insane with a saws-all, and cut fenders and entire nose off,and added hinges to raise it all from the front. It took me 2 months over the winter to get edge trim over all the sharp edges, and remount nose on Larger stainless steel hinges so it actually worked properly.
I liked the fact you could sit in the seat, and reach over the door edge, and lay your palm flat on the road. Yes, that low, and a blast to drive.

All this talk of British roadsters makes me think of the king of the widomakers, the Caterham 7 (engine not included*) you can install any level of insanity you desire from Rover 4s to Honda screamers and I think some have V8s. 300+hp 1500 curb weight and zero protection.

Thing was so fast Top Gear had to ban it because it put down numbers that put the supercar manufactures to shame.

Caterham 7 is an interesting car, open wheel, I always thought they botched nose, should have been more mid 60's indy car.

The fastest, or should say, quickest - car I ever saw was
an all aluminum tube chassis sand rail that weighed ~1200 lbs, w/driver when I was living in Daytona Beach. You could actually grab the front axle, and lift the entire front end of the car off the ground. The only thing keeping it down was the wide paddle tires
throwing 50 ft rooster tails of sand all over everything. Mad quick.

As the brits say....smashing, old boy, smashing.
Bugatti Veyron pales in comparison; that is sleek.
