All the chemicals banned in the USA brought up by others on this thread is a huge part of things not being made here. Just the chrome stuff is a big one. At one time every city had a great chrome plating place to get anything chromed you could think of on a car or truck. Old timers should remember they could dip steel 24.5 wheels in chrome back in the day.
Epa killed that and now your restoration stuff has to be sent to Mexico to have it done or buy cheap non “triple” dip low quality that rusts from china.

I was speaking to an old friend several months ago about what he is going through getting their old Washing machine fixed. They bought in in the early 90s. The only thing wrong with it is the main switch is worn out. Easy to fix. I have replaced a Washing Machine main switch in about 20 minutes. The problem?? They can't find the replacement. The maker GE no longer stocks it. The appliance parts store in Gainesville has a part number for a 3rd party but they are on backorder. This is becoming a chronic problem after 10 or so years. Getting replacement parts is next to impossible.

The same can be said for computer parts. I am currently TODAY looking for an HP Replacement Motherboard HP Part number 720691-501. My budget is no more than $125. I can't find it anywhere but from China. Right now I don't want to order from China. HP wants far too much $$$.

He has a collection of junkers.

The red 63 Corvair is his grandmas that she bought new.

34000 miles on it. He tore it apart 20 years ago and had it painted.

He is just getting around to putting it back together once he finishes repairing and releveling his pole barn from frost heave.

The 62 4 door is a beat survivor but it runs and drives good and is taken for drives monthly

The 65 3 speed manual convertible is his 8 year old boys field car It makes me cry.

They live up in the country in Newaygo

The 49 Buick is cool. He just bought that from the son of an old couple that bought it new
    And lived in town

He has been trying to buy it from them since 1987 where it sat parked out in the driveway not moving until he picked it up this summer.

It has some rust but the parts and trim are all there and it runs and he went through the brakes so he can drive it.

It would make an Awesome Hot Rod but he won’t do anything to it other than drive it the way it is.

    Tampa Appliance Parts 813-972-4242
I have dealt with this place in Tampa numerous times. They are very good at finding parts and are realistic on availability times.

During Covid my ex’s in Naples washing machine motor crapped out.

Everything on line was 3-6 weeks and from sketchy rated businesses

I called them up and they had it in 2 days for me. Same price as buying it online also.

I won’t deal with anyone else after dealing with them.

I’m not 100% sure, I think they bought new appliances! After about three or four phone calls and running into all those problems he just got aggravated! I’ll talk to him in a few days I’ll find out but I only brought it up for the reason I said most of the time old stuff getting parts is the problem

But is wasn't Bill that set it in motion. It started with the Reagan administration, but really was negotiated during George H.W. Bush time. After the signing of the Canada–United States Free Trade Agreement in 1988, the administrations of U.S. president George H.W. Bush, Mexican president Carlos Salinas de Gortari, and Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney agreed to negotiate what became NAFTA.
