    What is the penalty for a non current (i.e. expired) or missing proof of trailer insurance if inspected?
    Is it a federal standard or are states fining or giving psp/csa points individually?

    Yes to both questions. CVSA is a federal standard for inspections based on FMCSA's regulations. Regulations that every state and territory has codified to law.

    More important, I'm fairly sure the trailer doesn't need insurance separate from the required insurance for the tractor.

    I thought both units needed proof of insurance, current and on the individual units?
    We have fleet insurance, power from NY state and trailers in W VA but doesn't each unit have to carry a copy?

    I am out of New York and have a separate liability policy for my trailer and carry a separate insurance card for it.
    My insurance carrier requires this.
    Not sure if it’s a legal requirement or not ?
    But I can tell you law enforcement has asked to see it at road side before.

    NY mandates the type of insurance card used to be specific to the vehicle. In NJ we have a 'fleet' card carried in each truck and tractor nothing on the trailer except our registration & Inspection copy

    I asked because our manager thinks corporate should be sending it by months end.
    We have proof of insurance on each trailer, along with a copy of registration which does not expire. But our trailers insurance is annual, expires on Oct 1 and insurance cards replaced before that date hopefully. I don't know if the proof of insurance is required to be physically present on the unit, to be shown on demand or if it's simply our company's policy.
    My concern is if it's a regulation and I as operator am in violation what is the penalty as far as points on psp/csa or fine amount.

    Haven't searched regulations from NY.
    Trlrs are registered out of W VA.
    Insurance is out of Connecticut.
    I've assumed that since all of our trailers have a proof of insurance attached, and replaced annually, that it was a state or federal requirement and not a insurance company's stipulation.

    I'm curious as to the penalty for not having proof of Insurance if demanded during a DOT inspection?

    How many of us have ever been asked to see trailer insurance?

    I never have.

    Other then the requirements. I've never seen a trailer insurance card.

    They ask. I give them card. They check date. And that's as far as it's ever gone.

    Texas has no seperate trailer insurance. Just registration and inspection. The trailer becomes insured by the tractor as soon as it is latched to it. Not sure about fuel and chemical tank trailers in Texas but I think they work the same. Maybe that is the difference for @Dennixx ?
