I everyone. So ward didn't work out and neither did Sysco. So now on Monday I start at yrc as a road driver. Recruiter told me 2200 miles and .51-.53 a my mile. I was told extra board drivers make $60-$65k first year and veteran drivers make $100-$125k. Basically I was wondering how work conditions are going to be. And one thing is my old football coach is the transportation manager. Don't know if that helps anything.

I know their business hasn't been the greatest with no pention and everything but at least it's free health insurance. So if anyone knows what pay goes up too and if those numbers sound legit.

    Thanks fellas

Sounds great, probably the easiest of the 3, although, 2200 miles, (what, a week?) is a lot of driving, hope you're up for that. Sounds optimistic anyway, but YRC will be around for a little while yet. Be advised, I read, in 5 years, the teamsters pension fund will no longer be able to pay pensions, yeah, they're broke, so keep that in mind.
Now, the old football coach would have me nervous, I can hear it now,,,"Noobie, that trailer isn't square agin the dock, drop and give 50 pushups",,,oh man,,,

Does anyone know how the extra board works for road drivers. Im in Buffalo NY I don't know if that makes it better or worse. I hope the numbers I said are realistic.

I was calling another user on this thread but he is/was an extraboard driver in another company. Sorry. My mistake.

I’m skeptical of the mileage length you were given to be honest. It’s not a high mileage figure (440 miles a day), just unusual for a recruiter to give you any sort of seemingly concrete mileage number. I think you’ll be doing a lot of waiting by the phone or working the dock at first being that it’s a union gig, and we are around the corner from LTLs typical slow season.

I worked for Roadway Express which eventually became YRC Freight for 14 years. I started out with them on the “Extra Board”. It’s a very tough schedule for most people to handle and most do not make it thru. Mind you when I started there we were on the old hours of service and they could call you after 6 hours and you had to report to work in 2 hours after they called you. You will be on call 24/7. I’m not sure how it is in Buffalo but each terminal has a different formula to acquire days off. Most are 6 “tours” or runs and you get 48 hours off. It’s a good job and very easy work. The hardest part of your job will be to stay awake as you will have a very erratic schedule not knowing when to sleep or eat whaile waiting for the phone to ring. You will be in the western NY health insurance plan which is a phenomenal plan. I promise you will love it. Good luck to you

Plus YRCW is starting to merge their regional companies into YRC, which is designed to make things more efficient and cost effective, potentially reducing the amount of freight left for the extra board.

But either way it’s probably best to just put your head down and ride it out as long as you can. If/when you need to look for a new job, at least you’ll have some experience and can afford to be picky about where you want to work.

@noobie flatbedder the best advice I can give you is not to get yourself caught up in the drama of the business side of any company. Just show up when your supposed to and cash your check when it comes. If the checks stop cashing then it’s time to look. To many people think they know so much about companies finances yet those same people still drive a truck for a living

if your ok with being out on the road, Schneider has a gig called "JET SET" where the send you out to run the rail yards containers from long beach CA they give you a sleeper, no touch and youll make about 1,200 a week. my friend was running the rail yards said it wasnt that bad, you gotta be out for 2-3 weeks at time. seems cool.
