Since autonomous trucks are gaining serious ground should I be looking for a new career?

I don't see the point of continuing on as OTR, when these jobs are about to be replaced. But now I don't know what to do. I don't have any other skill sets and I am under 30 years old. What should I do? Join the military? Programming at local CC?

Don’t worry about it. It’s a long ways off.

I wouldn’t bet on losing your job anytime soon. EVEN IF there are viable autonomous trucks in service, they won’t all be. There will be jobs for truck drivers for quite awhile yet.

Join the military, truck drivers will still be needed after you leave the service and you can come back to trucking with very valuable veteran benefits safely in your back pocket.

One of my regrets in life is not enlisting when I was eligible to.

it's going to be a long time before autonomous trucks are working on the road and so far they still REQUIRE a driver....

If you're in your mid 20's you should be alright as for work for at least the next 3 decades before it take full control. They're saying 20 to 25 years before it fully takes over. I believe that a lot of things have to occur 1st before its fully working such as 5G availability everywhere, 95% to 100% autonomous four wheelers (when you have to much drivers driving around autonomous trucks it will causes issues), plus weather conditions that affect the sensors and roads where it snows because icy conditions will definitely mess an autonomous truck up. I believe that it will occur on straight highways 1st as it is right now in South/Western states like Arizona however in the city deliveries it will still take a long time to perfect. Plus what about the big Insurance companies? They're aren't going to settle & go away that easily. Piece of advice invest in some good stocks on the market as a plan 'b' backup as a savings for your financial insurance if you decide to follow through with your cdl.

Self-driving trucks: It's not happening for at least a decade

I guess I am just a crotchety old man. With the problems, the ENTIRE country has with the transportation Infrastructure things like potholes etc. I don't think it will be decades. I think it will be at least another 75 or so years. Most adults alive today are not going to get into a fully autonomous car. As long as people are operating cars I just don't see driverless trucks on the roads. I'm 62, I doubt I will live long enough to see if I am right or not! I just have a suspicion it will be at least 2075 + before we see fully driverless vehicles!
