I’m currently looking for a new company. I received an offer from someone who I believe to be the owner of a very small fleet (33 trucks) and I wanted to ask your opinion on his offer as I’m still new (1.5 years) and am not sure what a reasonable offer is especially in the Oversized aspect of the industry, which I have no experience at all. I’ll just bullet what I’ve learned from talking to him so far.
Oversized loads hauling mod boxes for apartments - weekly hometime and home all major holidays and Christmas bonus - 1500-1800 a week - some equipment has fridges and inverters, some don’t - no benefits - dedicated to VBC, Champion, Ritz, Excel.
This is what Iver learned so far. Does this sound like a reasonable offer or am I being played? Like I said, I have no experience with oversized loads so getting my foot into this aspect of the industry would be interesting. And are there any other questions I should be asking? I appreciate anyones advice.
Is This Job Offer Reasonable?

The very vast majority of 1099 companies are running illegal on how they pay. If they advertise to you they don't care about the law, why expect them to follow the law for other matters. Stuff like HOS, maintenance, or even pay.Lonesome, Lumper Humper, Nicholasaaron and 1 other person Thank this. -
That kind of pay and home weekly?
Sounds dubious.
Some trucks have the perks and some don't?
Sounds dubious.
No benefits.
Dubious.
ZVar is right.

50% out of service...with oversized. My instincts tell me that some of those aren’t mechanical but come from bootlegging OSOW and violating the terms of the permits and provisions. Those are 4 to 5 digit fines to the driver. Where is this business located at? I’d wager that @Superhauler knows them and could give you better detail.

How many inspections have they had? If they’ve had 2 and failed 1 that’s a 50% OOS rate. With that few trucks they may not be getting inspected that often.
And the difference in equipment isn’t a red flag on the surface. He’s a small company, probably buys a truck or two at a time, may even just buy what’s on the lot when he needs one.
The health insurance is your call. He’s small enough he isn’t required to provide it.
But if it’s 1099 instead of W-2 I wouldn’t even think about it.Suspect Zero, kylefitzy, Mohtrucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
