I had a chance to fine tune my numbers for August. Pretty much reflective with what the freight experts are reporting right now as far as rates, etc.
Since this thread is about Rates, I figured I'd peel back how I operate a little. As I've indicated over and over again on this thread, the way I do it is the way I've chosen to do it as an owner operator. Being home as much as I can is really a priority to me. However, no need to beat a dead horse.
I have no trailer payment because I paid it off this year. My truck payment is covered through the CARES ACT through the end of the year. However, all other line items, both fixed & variable are included, including $0.15 a mile maintenance escrow. I currently have thousands of dollars set aside in my maintenance escrow.
I pay myself a modest salary every month through my S Corp. Which includes health insurance (through the exchange) and a 401k contribution. Since our personal cost of living is so low, $3,600.00 a month with some benefits is adequate.
The net profit to the business in August was $11,060.00 + $3,600.00 = $14,660.00 in August.
Yes, I was home every night and yes this is short haul work with a dry van...
No, I do NOT earn that every month. The exercise is meant to demonstrate it CAN be done...
Perhaps that is chump change to most, but for me it's satisfactory. I'll also add that one main key I've learned in this business is to not drain the revenue by frivolous purchases, but to let it build.
This will be the last time I share any more of my numbers on this thread or this forum.

Take it as a compliment that you have haters. It just means your successful.D.Tibbitt, Dale thompson, Lostkeys and 3 others Thank this. -
As a single truck owner operator, I personally would rather do lower miles at a higher rate per mile for a happy medium. Less wear and tear on the equipment, etc. It's a fine balance. A balance that is not achieved by running freight for what some of these guys I know run it for.Last edited: Sep 20, 2020

Henry Ford said “whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right”.D.Tibbitt, Midwest Trucker and Ruthless Thank this. -
Well, the fact is it's all relative anyways. In the end, what difference does it really make? Each person has to plow their own field. Some have an acre and others have thousands of acres
Jeff Bezos will make more money in the next minute than I will in my entire lifetime!D.Tibbitt, Dale thompson and 062 Thank this. -

Yeah I recall somebody giving me back handed compliments and making sarcastic comments regarding the amount of business I do with Convoy. People like that generally shut up and go away for a while when you confront them about it.
D.Tibbitt Thanks this.
